:blobcatsadlife:
Cancelled my #Duolingo subscription. Close to the end of the course, which not being one of the big, well-maintained ones (Irish), was very underwhelming. Slán, ulchabhán glas.
As fun as it can be to learn a language, just learning it with no context makes it harder to keep my interest. Add some context, however, and bam!
Human: reading new toy's instructions in a different language, visiting a foreign country and ordering food, following along in a conversation on #Duolingo, etc.
Computer: fiddling with someone's open source project that is in a language you don't know, doing a code jam for a particular framework/language, etc.
Anyone else in the fediverse take language lessons on #Duolingo ? I achieved a 2000-day streak there this past Saturday, which is the longest contiguous streak I've ever managed.
It would have been even higher than this, if not for one holiday (Christmas Day?) years ago where I forgot to complete at least one lesson, and I didn't have any Streak Freezes equipped. I've had to use a few Streak Freezes in order to preserve this streak, but for the most part I'm diligent about completing at least two lessons every day.
Salut,
Merci
It's always nice to cheer for people I know there. If you'd like to connect, here's my invitation link. Just let me know here that you're a Masto friend and I will follow you back.
-This is so cool and helpful!
-I’m learning so quickly!
-I can share my progress with friends! 🥰
-I’m so obsessed with my streak haha!
-I want to punt this stupid owl into the centre of the sun
Just told my family I won't be renewing our DuoLingo family subscription because I won't support their replacement of actual human workers with "AI". This explains why their quality has been declining.
I reported a few erroneous answer rejections and DuoLingo emailed that they've accepted one report as correct, but it's not my job to fix their increasingly poor software and I won't support their drive to maximize profits at all costs.
So I'm kind of liking the red highlighting now and I'm surprised that I don't want to take a power drill to the skin tone I created. I think I need more practice with these things ...and that this one needs more work ...
On our most recent visit to the family in Egypt I just became painfully aware that I’m the only person on the family who doesn’t speak Arabic (though our youngest child only speaks fairly little Arabic he understands a lot more, and the older one speaks it fluently), and that’s just really annoying.
@nebyoolae@michael I was really struggling with #Duolingo.
It was ok, but at some point I noticed that it's not consistent and not applicable to real scenarios. At least few years ago, maybe it's better now.
If you stick with #Duolingo long enough, it moves away from questions about rhinos and elephants and onto more adult topics.
I'm also trying #busuu The quality and depth of questions is not nearly as good. It's like a computer program from the early 2000's. You quickly find yourself answering the exact same questions again.
On the other hand, it does offer real grammar lessons, unlike Duo.
The free version of busuu constantly asks you to upgrade.
For traveling, I like to be able to order off the menu in the native language. I got sick of #Duolingo's gamification and tried #Pimsleur for French. That's what I'd use if I were spending significant time there: Pimsleur is hard but no nonsense. I'm now on #Babbel but it's even easier than Duolingo and doesn't feel like I'm advancing at all. I might go back to Duolingo and submit to the gamification. Thoughts?
