I find it not exactly helpful that in Polish north is północ and south is południe (and I can never remember which one is which).

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@ondrej But Czech also has sever and jih.

Them both starting with the same letter is complicating things. I’m using shorthands for refering to points. Where railway lines branch off, I’m using a suffix of y and a letter. Normally that’s a town, but sometimes there are so many points that it helps to just be able to use directions. And I do want to use the local language.

Niche “problems” for sure.

Does passenger behaviour on platforms vary between countries I wonder?

The TER Nuits-sous-Ravières - Paris Bercy is peculiar

At all interim stations the platform entrances are at the back of the train. But at Bercy the exit is at the front

I walk to the front at Nuits so I’m near the exit at Paris, but pretty much no others do, despite SNCF Connect indicating it’s a long train

I’m pretty sure in UK or Germany more would do as I do

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon I’m always baffled when travelling with people and I say “let’s go further down the platform” most people make two steps and then stop again and really need to be dragged onwards.

One of the most iconic emblems of the Dutch railway network is soon to be extinct. During electrification of the railways of Noord-Brabant in the 1950’s, concrete overhead wire portals were used. Now 70 years later, they have reached end of life and are due for replacement. The portals used in Noord-Brabant are quite elegant, because they have a lightly curved top bar. ProRail already started the replacement, which is planned to take a couple of more years.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@smveerman They better keep the portals between Hilversum and Utrecht!

Warum so schwer?

@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@LeNerd Dumme Frage: Das Telefon started nicht, wenn man die Simkarte nicht entsperren kann? Oder verstehe ich was flasch?

@LeNerd Interessant. Bein iPhone kann ich einfach “Abbrechen” sagen und gut ist.

Why are batteries always specified in Ampere hours? Isn’t that a bit meaningless unless their voltage is also given?

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@yschaeff Assuming they can actually deliver that current for an hour. For this 10 Ah powerbank I have, I’m not sure.

Is it so that if you tap “cash and balance” on an ATM they will charge you extra for the balance inquiry? I am very distrusting about that company and always choose “other” and then just “cash withdrawal”.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@tml Any reason why you use these at all instead of a bank’s ATM?

partim, (edited )
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@tml I’ve always assumed they charge a lot extra and avoided them like the plague.

That voltage and frequency range on this train socket is just… interesting.
Seems like they use something like a fixed ratio transformer from the source voltages of 1000-1500-3000 V with an optional simple inverter if the power happens to be DC.

I wonder what kind of appliance is safe to plug in. Despite the sticker, I think that switching mode power supply, like the one for a laptop would actually work well.

23 pages of manure (literally, sometimes. I hate manure) that is the extreme-right Dutch Agreement can contain interesting stuff nevertheless. For there's two sentences (both on page 9):

  1. 'In the border regions, good rail connections with the neighboring country are essential.'
  2. ´There will be a proposal for cross-border rail transport, including the connection of five train stations to international HSL lines (e.g. Hengelo, Venlo, Heerlen, Groningen and Zwolle).' (1/3).
partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon @patrick It only says five places will be connected to high-speed lines not that they actually will get high-speed lines. Also, it lists the five concrete places as “for example”.)

Fun in Amsterdam Zuid. No trains from and to Schiphol. Metro 50 cancelled. Metro 52 delays due to overcrowding.

The main problem: There are mo bars in the area to sit this out. And I don’t like any of the restaurants.

Ah

We’ve got another example of that legendary cooperation between state railways today in Köln

Where the Eurostar* stops at the platform is NOT shown on the screens (while for RE and ICE trains it is shown)

So Eurostar employs a person on the platform to tell passengers where to stand 🤦‍♂️

    • Eurostar is 55% SNCF, 18% SNCB
partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon Worse, anecdotally,* they also don’t show any real-time information. The train will just disappear off the screen after scheduled departure.

  • Seen in Aachen a while ago.
partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@grlodi @jon One still hopes that all the operators will one day get together with DB InfraGO and let them publish all real-time information and produce passenger information themselves.

I love the sound of the wind rushing over a pantograph at high speed when you are sitting directly underneath it. Smells like... Victory

View from a train travelling at 125mph, and looking up at the roof which is lower to accommodate the pantograph well

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jamesjefferies @25kV If you’re there next, go from Basel to Geneva or Lausanne via Biel. The line is first runs through some deep valleys of the Jura mountains and then along lake shores. Beats going via Bern by a mile.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jamesjefferies @25kV I understand the sentiment but would urge you to reconsider. For one, some of the quirkiest railways are there …

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jamesjefferies Definitely from Martigny up to the Vallorcine. In my book the most impressive railway in all of Switzerland. There are a few more quite steep lines in that area out of Aigle and Bex.

The best bit of the MOB is the climb out of Montreux – you can turn that into a loop Montreux – Montbovon – Romont – Lausanne.

And then there’s Jura. Neuchâtel to La-Chaux-de-Fonds is pretty cool, from there onwards on the narrow gauge to Le Noirmont and either Glovelier or Tavannes.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jamesjefferies But basically, all the lines branching off the main lines into the mountains are worth doing. Almost all of them are operated by their own small railway company and have their own distinct character. And somehow there’s lots of them in Romandy.
