For the train'ers here:

My brother-in-law wants to cycle from Antwerp to Paris with his e-bike (next year).

He'd like to take his e-bike from Paris back to Brussels/Antwerp by train.

He can't find a train that takes e-bikes.

Any advice?

@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@verbeeld You can take bikes both on French TER trains and NMBS trains. As far as I can tell, neither has a ban on electric bikes. Paris to Antwerp this way is about five hours
with one change in Lille. SNCF says that bikes on TERs are free, for Belgium you need a supplement which seems to be four euros.

🇭🇷🛤🌞 It feels like a true summer day today. This regional service from 🇭🇷 to the border town of 🇭🇷 is working with and nearly in a straight line through the flat lands of Slavonia. Beautiful and a 🇭🇺 service is waiting there for crossing the border into the neighbouring country ❤️!

@jon @diningcar Maybe we should organise a thing in Vienna around that time? Like, a mini conference or somesuch?

I wonder if doing limited runs of high quality reprints of travel
posters would be a viable thing. Something like: offer a poster for pre order for, say, two months. If there are enough orders, scan it, clean it up, print it, and ship it. Then do the next poster.

@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@geeeero I didn’t see anything in York. But there is something associated with the people behind it (or was it the London Transport Museum?) that does sell prints from their collection. They just wouldn’t deliver outside the UK when I checked last. Might have changed by now.

@patrick Oh! I should stop in Den Haag on my way back, then.

I wasn’t planning this, but because the neighbours are having a birthday party, the islands are insanely expensive, and I panicked and couldn’t think of anything better than Train World in Brussels, I might* now get to see Antwerp’s port from a train window.

  • Might, because trouble is starting already on the high-speed line to Rotterdam which has been closed all day due to a signalling fault.

Schaerbeek station. Twelve platform tracks for four trains an hour (possibly more on weekdays).

Turns out the residents of Schaerbeek aren’t morning people.

Definite recommendation for Train World. Where else will they show you a rail saw and a rail drill?

A manual rail drill: two metal hooks two hang it into a rail and a metal tower with a handle an two chains to run the drill.

partim,

@tml In the announcements it was just tram 3.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

Of course they didn’t have this one at the museum shop (although number 2 was sold out, so maybe they did?)

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

And off to another loop through the port. I’d go direct but I have a weekend ticket which gives me a serious discount if I go back to where I came from.

Interesting:* we’re doing the same clock-wise northbound as we did southbound.

  • Yeah, I know.

I stand corrected. Roosendaal does still have fancy international trains.

The train to Amsterdam is being swapped in Rotterdam because all its toilets are broken. Just in case anyone from, er,
certain other train operators is following along.

Den Haag is celebrating 75 years of PCC trams. These trams, based on an American design from the 1930s were built in license by a company in Belgium well into the 1970s.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

These trams are cousins of the Tatra trams which are based on the same PCC license.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

When you are in Scheveningen (which is where the trams were going) you walk along the sea front from one tram stop to the other past the sea bridge, even if it lacks basically all the charm of those in the UK.

Meanwhile, the very Dutch classicist Kurhaus looks a bit out of place in between all the brutalism and post-brutalism.
