Me "I'm just a boring middle aged woman and I managed to install Linux, anyone can do it"

Also me "I was an IT manager for 20 years"

In my defence I honestly have no idea what I'm doing, and didn't for 20 years ๐Ÿ˜‚

@Tattooed_Mummy tbh that's most of us in IT too... Maotly making it up day to day

Is it worth spending lots of money on a really good computer mouse? Or is that just mouse snobbery by people who want to be able to configure button 9 to shuffle their windows into alphabetical order and the like?

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@sil I have been a logitech fan for a long time, think I have 3 or so of the mx anywhere 2 mice for different machines. I love them though with big hands they are a little small really, but otherwise amazing

This week, I learned that wireless key fobs aren't fully waterproof, after jumping into a lake to assist a stranded pair of kayakers.

I discovered this only by being unable to start my scooter, which was a drag. I should have known, but this is my first time with a vehicle that uses one.

BMW Motorcycle dealers charge $300 for a replacement, so I took the broken fob apart and noticed corrosion (highlighted). I scrubbed the board down with a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol, and it works again!

@thomrstrom one of these days my running in the rain is going to leave me unable to unlock the car and go home...

Overnight print is off to a solid start. I haven't done one this big in a while and I'm excited to see how goes the gradient filament. Also, the estimates for how long this print will take are crazy. Maybe it will still be running at 18:00 tomorrow?? That's not what Cura said. But we shall see!

sldrant,

@DrFerrous @pbl0m @suvidu iirc octoprint just counts layers, not detail per layer

Apparently, at some point, started deleting accounts that hadn't logged in for a year. I guess it was mid-2000s the last time I logged in. So much for history.

So long, 1565**** o7

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@nivrig must have been longer. I logged in once every 5 or 10 to find I still know my number (and password!). All my contacts are "last seen a long time ago"...

I've just heard a programming youtuber refer to a JWT (JSON Web Token) as "a jort".

I need a moment of quiet contemplation.

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@grifferz think it's on the website somewhere too. I found it really odd the first time someone pronounced it, but I'm quite used to it now. Still odd tho

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@grifferz OK, missed that. Never heard it as "jort"...
"jot" loads tho

If anyone in @norniron wants to check if theyโ€™re on the electoral register, thereโ€™s an easy online way to do it now https://www.eoni.org.uk/Am-I-registered

Iโ€™ve just done it, and it only took a couple of minutes.

Second reservoir done. I think I'll use white for the inner pot. I love how the color transitions turned out with these two!

it's an odd thing. give kids sparkling water and see what happens. my completely uninformed opinion, based upon being a fizzy water addict, is that kids will drink it because it is "interesting" in the mouth. also carbonators are cheap!

Light pollution sucks...
Friends only 5mi away all have amazing photos of it too!

sldrant,
@sldrant@mastodon.social avatar

@drajt the annoying thing is we're so far north we should have seen it. So many local friends have got pictures. Don't know if we gave up too early, or needed to drive elsewhere.
Only consolation is nobody has said it wad amazing with the naked eye, only caught on camera. Seeing via a phone only isn't really experiencing it.

Took the plunge on the slightly odd looking and more expensive mini-PC for my new NAS box.

It got me 16Gb of DDR5, a USB3.2 port on the back for the RAID enclosure, and UK power supply. Also a 512Gb system drive.

It should arrive in a few weeks, which gives me time to shop for data drives.
