Hello as of about 15 minutes ago it is our anniversary. Today we celebrate 20 years married and 35 together. Tom is the most interesting person I’ve ever met and I am just so goddamned lucky.

I know I'm a broken record about the masks but I literally have not had a cold in 4 years and I don't miss them.

Okay, time to go sit in a chilly room and spend hours lining up fruit fly eggs in neat little rows and injecting DNA into them.

If you think that sounds fiddly, difficult, boring, and frustrating, then congratulations. You're very perceptive.

Greetings from Massachusetts, where legal gay marriage was introduced to the US 20 years ago today.

It took us 8 days to get everything together so our anniversary's not 'til next week but the big public one is today.

The Big Dig was traumatic, and still has kind of a public works hangover, but it really was that hard. I remember during its second decade a friend in San Francisco asking, "What's up with that?!?" I explained by asking her to imagine that 101 was converted into a tunnel, running under its current route the whole way it runs through the city, avoiding other tunnels, WITHOUT CLOSING 101. She looked blank and said, "You couldn't do that."

I hurt all over today and that sounds dramatic but really I'm just 55.

I am slowly making my way through "A Visit from the Goon Squad." It was enthusiastically recommended and loaned to me by good friends and I want to honor their intent but it is rough going. The root problem is that it is VERY well written, really carefully crafted with an eye for the detail that makes it all ring true, so it really vividly brings to life this whole world of sad, unpleasant people and their miseries and humiliations.

Do folks know that mushrooms and yeast are more closely related to us than either of us are to plants?

I just think that's neat.

My last boost was just because I wasn't sure my gay mutuals would be following NASA and I wanted them to see the cute guy. I'm not ashamed of it.

I'm sorry but I'm gonna say it again.

It is appalling and unjust and ugly that our (US) tax dollars are being used to fund Palestinian genocide in Gaza. It's gotta stop. It is appropriate to protest and keep pressure on to stop it.

All the other genocides we are currently supporting with our tax dollars, arms sales, and favorable trade conditions—the Kurds in Turkey, the Shiites in Saudi Arabia, and the Uyghurs in China leap to mind—are also appalling; why just these protests? Really, why?

I was interested to note, when I started learning French, that what we express in English as "right here" or "right now" is expressed in French like it is in Spanish, "the same here" or "the same now." (Aquí mismo, ici même.) So I asked an Italian coworker how you say "right now" in Italian, and he grinned and said, "We don't have 'right now' in Italian." I laughed, and he riffed on, "We have 'Italian now' and 'German now'."

I know I have some vegan mutuals on here, so I just want to say that if you're vegan for ethical reasons but miss weird, smelly cheeses, and if you HAVEN'T already checked it out, please try some iru.

It's fermented carob. It's SO intense: a heavy, cheesy funk. I like it with sautéed carrots and onions.

My is maple walnut pie. I made hamantaschen this weekend, and you cut little circles of the dough after rolling it out. The scraps from one batch, pressed together, are just the right amount of dough for a pie crust. Tom chose maple walnut.

If you're a normally color-sighted person, you might not know that traffic lights (in the US) are not just specified colors, but specified SHADES of those colors. So that, to many colorblind people, the red light looks red and the green light looks white.

I didn't take the dot tests until middle school; as a child, I assumed the "green light" was just called that by convention, like the "green room" where you wait before going on TV.

I had some buttery garlic mashed potatoes to use up, and we were going to the store so I could get fresh greens, so we had a kind of spinach and potato pakoras with a lime and mint raita.
