I would like to speak to your manager

so I can tell them about the great job you're doing because it is very difficult to be working in the service industry and you deserve to be appreciated and recognized for your hard work.

I did this recently. (It was by email but still.) It was VERY well-received.

Do y'all think other countries committing atrocities will receive the same type of rightful and long due backlash that Israel has been receiving.

Will there be a boycott against China for their treatment Uyghurs?

What about Saudi Arabia's treatment of folks in Yemen?

stevegis_ssg,

@BlackAzizAnansi
Or our dear NATO allies Turkey and the Kurds.
Or the awful circular firing squad in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Or …

It is 100% true that the Istraeli government has been practicing some kind of ethnic cleansing for decades. And it SHOULD be stopped. And it's absolutely true that it's not antisemitic to criticize the Israeli government.

But I do question whether antisemitism influences which genocidal governments get criticized.

Greetings from Massachusetts, where legal gay marriage was introduced to the US 20 years ago today.

It took us 8 days to get everything together so our anniversary's not 'til next week but the big public one is today.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a relationship?

Mine might sound kind of dark in relation to the question, but here goes:

People change, and they should, it's part of being a person. Some people are lucky, and they change in the same direction, but some don't, and that's okay too. There's no shame in leaving a relationship or changing the nature of a relationship that no longer serves you. We are all taught that every relationship, whether romantic or friendship, is supposed to last forever, but nothing is forever, and forcing something that no longer works, just ends in anger and bitterness. Knowing when to let go is as important as knowing when to hold on through a rough patch, and how to know either of those things is the most cliché advice of all, COMMUNICATE.

When we celebrate an anniversary (big one coming next week!) people often ask "What's your secret?" The answer I always give is to never pass up an opportunity to tell them you love them.

Anyway, sometimes my brain creates really sad scenarios, and I play out my reactions to these scenarios, and it makes me really upset, but it's like I'm trying to prepare myself for every possibility even though it's both impossible and destructive.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

I live in Boston. I'm one of the came-her-for-school-and-never-left brigade. I love that our major local industry is higher ed. You can literally make math jokes and multilingual puns and strangers in bars will laugh. Also I love that I am in a Blue Bubble, where I and my queer lefty friends feel safe.

Big cons are that it is a very segregated city/region, and we're having a housing crisis that causes a lot of my friends to have to move far out from the urban core.

The Big Dig was traumatic, and still has kind of a public works hangover, but it really was that hard. I remember during its second decade a friend in San Francisco asking, "What's up with that?!?" I explained by asking her to imagine that 101 was converted into a tunnel, running under its current route the whole way it runs through the city, avoiding other tunnels, WITHOUT CLOSING 101. She looked blank and said, "You couldn't do that."

Every generation of kids wants to identify themselves in a new way, and yes, we've all been guilty of finding it funny or annoying, but the truth is we all did it. I'm happy for them that it's safer for them to really explore their identity, and sexuality in public, and not just little secret corners of the internet, or shadowy bars that people only whispered about. Maybe we are fine with words like Queer, Gay, or Ace, we fought for them to be fine, and maybe it feels strange that they would reject something so hard won. We should let them find their own identities though, it's what we wanted, right?! So, Cheers to all the new words and acronyms, I can never seem to keep up with, I hope each generation gets to be less scared to be themselves.

I love the fact that a special, integral part of the experience of adolescence is this very specific sense that NO ONE UNDERSTANDS HOW I FEEL AND NO ONE HAS EVER FELT LIKE THIS BEFORE, which we have all exactly felt.

I am slowly making my way through "A Visit from the Goon Squad." It was enthusiastically recommended and loaned to me by good friends and I want to honor their intent but it is rough going. The root problem is that it is VERY well written, really carefully crafted with an eye for the detail that makes it all ring true, so it really vividly brings to life this whole world of sad, unpleasant people and their miseries and humiliations.

Do folks know that mushrooms and yeast are more closely related to us than either of us are to plants?

I just think that's neat.

stevegis_ssg,
@stevegis_ssg@mas.to avatar

Similarly (though more recently), starfish and sea urchins are more closely related to us than either of us are to insects or molluscs.

And more recent still, rodents and rabbits are more closely related to us than either of us are to cats or cows.

stevegis_ssg,
@stevegis_ssg@mas.to avatar

Oh p.s.: in case anyone's curious, the group names:

• Fungi and animals (and anything else descended from their last common ancestor) are "opisthokonts."

• Vertebrates and starfish are "deuterostomes."

• Rodents and primates are "euarchontoglires."

“Fluent Python” is an excellent example of a “good programming language book” — it’s not cluttered with “enterprise examples” it’s focused on how python works and goes into detail on edge cases. This lets one write code with real confidence that you know everything it’s doing. It is also written with the aim to justify why python is the way that it is. Which I need or I get irritated.

If you like python you should probably have a pdf or buy a copy.

Now which book on Java is analogous?

This is my basic problem with object-oriented programming, even though I understand its importance and necessity. The whole "don't you worry your pretty little head about its underlying structure, just use the provided methods to interact with it" attitude galls me.

I refuse to get pregnant, because even though no one will admit it, I'm pretty sure that fetus controls you from the inside like I'm a mech suit for it.

stevegis_ssg,
@stevegis_ssg@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr

Oh, it totally does.

It secretes various hormones into the maternal circulation. Some of them raise your blood pressure (so that more nutrients get to the fetus), and some women have to be hospitalized for dangerously high blood pressure. There's also a fetal protein that binds insulin and prevents the mother's cells from sensing it, so that she'll have higher blood sugar (again, more for baby), and so gestational diabetes is a thing.
