So yesterday this came flying right at my face. I tried to dodge, but it landed on my head.

Bumblebees aren't aggressive but they can sting in theory and unlike honeybees, they don't die if they do. I was worried that it would get tangled in my hair and panic.

Hair is a mess, glad I'm getting it cut on Friday. Also I want to get some more henna in there for Pride month/summer.

Went for a wee walk with @dana earlier to see the sunset. Got some nice photos. There wasn't actually that much wind but this skirt seems to dance like there is anyway...

I’m old enough to remember my fellow liberal students running up and down the halls at college, just thrilled that the Shah was gone, and Ayatollah Khomeini was returning to Iran.

@shoq The Shah should never have been installed in the first place. Iran was a democracy before UK/US back coup. If they had left well alone we'd have never got Khomeini.

Some cultures have historically lacked a concept of straightness and had it imposed upon them by colonialism. But even cultures with a concept of 'straightness' have varied in their definitions over time. Ergo it is a social construct.

Straightness as a social construct comes from a society considering certain behaviours or traits as Queer. Queerness then comes first, then creates a construct of Straight to imply 'not-Queer'. This stemmed from the desire of an authoritarian society to oppress what it consider 'queer', especially in colonised cultures with no such concept. Queerness was never just about sexuality. Any deviation from expected gender binary expression was always oppressed. But the construct of what has been considered 'correct gender expression' is different between cultures and across generations and subcultures. It being a social construct doesn't mean it lacks real world consequences.

And so when we see extremists saying things like 'drinking that drink makes you gay', they are expressing their own social construct of 'straightness'. They aren't saying that a man drinking that drink will suddenly want to have sex with other men. What they mean is that drinking that drink is outside their gender binary idea of male expression, and thus 'queer'. We laugh at it because we can't comprehend such a narrow definition of 'straightness', but to those that hold that view it is all too real.

I think this is important to realise, because according to the extremists narrow view of 'straightness' (and mark, they don't all even agree with each other on the exact boundaries), even a lot of people who consider themselves straight, are seen as somewhat queer to the extremists eyes. All the more reason for straight people to learn how to be good queer allies, for their own self preservation, if they can't find it within themselves to do so out of compassion. Because if the extremists are allowed to win, they may find their own choice of clothing, musical tastes, hobbies, beverage, called into question and forbidden them.

Errh. Cramping time of month again. Feel like maybe its a breach of etiquette to talk about it, but also feel like 'fuck that, why shouldn't I talk about it?' This is my life after all! Plus so many people, including doctors, are in denial that trans femme and trans women on estrogen get cramping, and that needs to change.
