When I wake up with a blank mind, I know it's a good day to read over what I've written. As the words sink in, I start to come alive...

What's the nicest thing a writer's ever done for you?

I'll never forget the first reader of my very first novel. Her thorough comments were essentially an MFA course in writing.

In essence, every story is a love story - between a writer and their characters.

Because if we don't love them despite (or because of) their flaws, who will?

wendyparciak,

@alan Good point. Some characters are too despicable to be anything other than hated. I should have specified MCs!

wendyparciak,

@alan Yeah, dark humor is a terrific middle ground. I bet you can accomplish it if you keep practicing. And nice that you have a role model.

I love it when a story turns a character's biggest flaw into a positive trait.

My MC's inability to focus, for example, helps her to think outside the box.

wendyparciak,

@siblingpastry Mine is the latter - it's a very isolated society where there's no ADD diagnosis but that's what it is.

Dangit, life is getting in the way, meaning no time for writing. I don't feel like a whole person if I can't write or at least do a little editing!

If you have a way to maintain your sanity in this situation, I'd love to hear it.

wendyparciak,

@alan At least I don't feel alone in this!

wendyparciak,

@alan Maybe you can brainstorm with your critique partners? I find that super helpful!

Do you ever stare at the empty "New Post" box and wonder when you'll have some exciting writing news to share?

wendyparciak, to writing

If you had to choose between reading a book & watching a movie, which would it be?

Book for me. Though I must say, movies do provide good visual fodder for potential story characters...

wendyparciak, to writing

No matter the upheaval around me--in the world, in my own family--I have a quiet place to sit & write.

For this I am grateful.

A writer's favorite game: brainstorming with other writers on how to fix a manuscript. Fun and productive, both!

You know that feeling when you get some solid critique that finally gives you a good idea what's wrong with your MS?

Got that last night, and--eureka! Can't wait to dig into it.

wendyparciak, to writing

I always wake up hungry, stomach growling, ready to attack the day. Who's gonna get some writing done today?

wendyparciak,

@juergen_hubert Fascinating!

Empathy - does your MC have it?

It's an increasingly rare trait in this fast-paced world, where people talk more than listen, and where global problems are so dire that any one person's struggles can easily be dismissed.

wendyparciak, to writing

Do you write more when you're happy / content or when you're sad / frustrated ?

I don't write as much when discontented, but I may sometimes write better. Those emotions have to go somewhere...

wendyparciak, to writing

Last night I had a writerly meltdown in which I despaired of ever getting my stuff in front of readers. Sometimes the "write for myself" attitude starts to feel mighty lonely...

The wind batters the bluff, shifting the waves ever closer to the house. I used to rail against it but lately I've come to accept it. Kind of like fighting with my characters until I realize that their way is the only way forward.

wendyparciak,

@siblingpastry haha, that's the way to do it!

wendyparciak, to writing

Rituals: Do you rely on them to write?

I'm trying not to. As much as I love my quiet desk with a view, there's tremendous value in being able to pull out my laptop and write in whatever space I find myself.

wendyparciak,

@siblingpastry The only trouble I have with writing outside is that I can't see my screen very well!

wendyparciak,

@siblingpastry That's a great idea. Don't know why I didn't think of it!

wendyparciak,

@siblingpastry I'll have to check.
