It’s easy to feel powerless these days. It feels like so much is out of our hands: Conflicts and fascism on the rise, threatening of human rights, especially of LGBTQIA+ people, a lackluster pandemic response.

There’s not a lot we can change, but going to vote. Elect people that align with your values. Re-elect them if they prove to be trustworthy. Elections can feel like doing nothing, but they are your direct way to change politics.

Elections are a super power. Use it.

FYI when I’m not interacting with you like normal, you might be at a conference. I don’t want to worry about you, so I might have muted you for the next few days. I do that for my own mental health.

Stay safe, keep others safe, mask up.

Am I alone in the view that’s people need to meet WCAG first before really looking into improving UX?

Sure, a lot of things can be improved alongside doing the minimum, but if you don’t meet WCAG, you leave people behind.

I guess at accessbility companies, the time between announcing layoffs and betting on “AI” sigh is exactly two months:

Accessibility tests are much easier if you go by success criterion and write up failures of them instead of identifying possible issues and then assign SCs to it.

And it gives you a handy guide to keep track of what you already tested and what not. Try to flip your approach and see if you think it’s easier, too!

That you can do better than the minimum guidance of WCAG IS THE WHOLE POINT.

It’s not wiggle room that you can do better.

You can drive your tires to the absolute minimum of what is allowed, but you can also have more profile on them. It’s totally ok. That doesn’t mean there is wiggle room.

Go and vote this coming week. Vote like it might be your last election, because it might be it if you don’t. https://yatil.social/@yatil/112507090248577835

If your pitch is “X but accessible” you’re building features. That’s cool, but maybe you don’t need to build the X part.

Use an API to get the information from the less accessible places, provide an alternative UI that is easy to use. Help to make the content accessible where people go now instead of making a third place “for people with accessibility needs”.

To make “X but accessible” succeed, you need to be the best “X” compared existing solutions, which is almost impossible. Zoom did it.

Two days ago, a stone was thrown onto the window of a housing unit for people with disabilities in Mönchengladbach, Germany. The stone had “euthanasia is the solution” written on it.

It’s clearly a right-wing neo-Nazi attack, considering that the Nazis used to systematically kill disabled people which they deemed unworthy to live.

There has not been an appropriate outrage. Ableism is still very common in Germany, and the Nazi history is a reason for it.

Nazis raus!

Filed a bug on a pretty inacurate web·dev article today. I appreciate the drive to explain WCAG rules, but you need to be accurate. Text MUST have a 4.5:1 contrast ratio (unless >24px or bold and > 18.6px, then it MUST be 3:1). Don’t weasel word a “should” in there.

Turns out when you use aria-owns on an element and point it to a wrapper of all your content on the page and then hide the element that owns that content, Safari/VO hides all of the page content, as it belongs to the hidden element.

That’s not a good look.

Love that we here in Germany are basically prohibited from getting vaccinations, even voluntarily, unless we meet certain condition – mostly age and existing illness.

“You first have to get LongCOVID before we allow you vaccinations to avoid the thing you got” is bad policy. https://zirk.us/@AlexKourvo/112469763159775160

Will we honestly talk about the trickery in the “Be My Eyes Accessibility with GPT-4o“ video? Like the taxi that uses the signal way before the passenger signal and actually basically passed the signalling passenger before the signal and still coming to a stop? Or that we don’t see any real processing time? Or that the voice is clear despite standing in London with speakers on? (1/3)

Be My Eyes has a lot of goodwill in the community – and rightly so. I would also think that exploring how to make their systems better with “AI” recognition makes sense. I have no problem with any of that (as long as it is ethical, affordable, reliable).

But if they participate in producing an advertisement video with “AI” claims that are impossible to verify, then it should be OK to be skeptical about it, especially with the deceiving claims that “AI” companies regularly make.

I was a bit sad when I read that Raindrop.io which powers @links started to add “AI” to its product.

BUT:

Today this paragraph in the email announcement delighted me. This is how to use “AI” language models correctly and give users choice. Bravo.

My twelve days away from “work work” end after the weekend, but my stress levels are still at 11.

I’m so bad at relaxing these days. Even if I don’t do anything or do enjoyable things (Hiking, Lego, watching TV), it’s all stressful.

I don’t know what to do, and I guess this is all burnout-consequences still after many years.

sigh, exhausted

We used to have 14 halogen bulbs at 14 watts in the ceiling fixures in this appartment. They are built in and I am not the largest fan of them because they create a weird spotlight light.

That said, I just finished replacing them with 3 and 5 watt LED bulbs.

And while we have them never on at once, that means that the energy they need went from 196 watts to about 56 watts.

(The 3W are less bright than the 5W/14W but I vastly prefer their light. I don’t need to be in stadium lighting.)

“But it’s not accessible, is it?”

“…”

Every inaccessible relaunch is a missed opportunity. Inaccessible relaunches must stop. Now.
