The BBC's experiment with Mastodon is pathbreaking in English-language news -- a major organization setting up its own instance. They've really thought this through. Key language:

"We're using social.bbc as the domain, so you can be sure these accounts are genuinely from the BBC. And by linking to and from the BBC’s website, we have verified our identity on Mastodon."

Family just got one of these dumb things and I need a quick replacement option to order and return this crap. What is there that works offline and I can set up to work with fruit phones? (Not a fruit phone/fruit salad user)

Is there any actually-good* way to run Linux GUI apps on Android? I love my Pixel Tablet for what it is intended to be (a Nest Hub plus around-the-house media consumption screen), but I keep feeling like it would be a SUPER convenient form factor if it could just tap into the huge ecosystem of adaptive apps for GNOME.

*I've tried a bunch of Play Store apsp claiming this and they're all convoluted scripts with manually-configured VNC servers and shit.
