Ran away from reddit, trying to wrap my head around this Fediverse thing.

RE: Is Ernest still here?

I check in here quite often, but for now, I'm just focusing on clearing spam and keeping the instance alive. In January, I was working on the AP module, and there has been significant progress in the work, which hasn't been publicly published yet. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the year, I developed a skin condition that...

Kovukono,

High-level overviews of a couple big scandals:

Sexual harassment/assault cases:

  • One of Californiaโ€™s governmentโ€™s departments brought forward a case in 2021 detailing that women had unequal pay, were sexually harassed, were subject to retaliation for reporting issues, and were also subject to discrimination if pregnant. Wikipedia article here.
  • Lawsuit also detailed that โ€œfrat boy cultureโ€ was prevalent and there was no meaningful penalty for sexual discrimination.
  • One woman had nude photos of herself shared, and as a result committed suicide during a company retreat.
  • Multiple other agencies have pursued Blizzard over this. The SEC has had Blizzard pay out $35 million for not having a proper reporting structure, and made a $18 million settlement pool. The pool has been criticized for being far too small.
  • Original lawsuit appears to still be continuing.

Hong Kong

  • A player in a Hearthstone tournament said โ€œLiberate Hong Kong. Revolution of our age!โ€ He was immediately removed from the tournament, given a 1-year ban, and forfeited all winnings.
  • Two stream casters also had their contact cancelled.
  • Blizzard later stated that they would return the playerโ€™s winnings, reduce the ban to six months, change the streamersโ€™ ban to six months, and would ban a team that supported the playerโ€™s action for six months, stating his actions violated a contract term that "offends a portion or group of the public, or otherwise damages [Blizzardโ€™s] image."
  • Blizzard has denied this has anything to do with their financial ties to Tencent.
  • Wikipedia article about this

Diablo 4 expansion

The first two were lifted from the controversies section of Blizzardโ€™s Wikipedia page, and they have more information in the linked pages and articles in those pages. For more information, Iโ€™d suggest reading there.

Personally, the way the sexual harassment has been handled has stopped me from touching their games. Theyโ€™ve shown no remorse aside from being caught, theyโ€™ve been accused of shredding evidence during the investigation, and instead of addressing the issues, were instead upset that they werenโ€™t approached privately before the public lawsuit. Instead of showing a willingness to reform, they appear to be entirely concerned with preventing financial damage.

Thatโ€™s a huge freaking problem. Why is it so hard to see, clearly, the evils committed by both parties, here?

My position is easy to express, but apparently too nuanced.

  • Israel has a right to exist.
  • Israel has a right to defend itself.
  • Israelโ€™s right to defend itself does not extend to illegal occupation of Palestinian land and systematic oppression of Palestinians. <โ€“ This is the part theyโ€™re doing wrong.
  • Palestine has a right to exist.
  • Palestine has a right to defend itself.
  • Terrorist factions in Palestine donโ€™t have a right to exist or commit atrocities against either Israelis or the people of Palestine. <โ€“ This is the part theyโ€™re doing wrong.

Am I taking crazy pills? Is all that not just blatantly fucking obvious?
