Which is more important? Learning from your own mistakes or learning from other people's mistakes?

Or is the real problem the idea that any mistakes can be prevented? Maybe we just have to make the same mistakes over and over again, and the entire project of worrying about the unknowable future is the real mistake?

Too many examples in the current news, but it really feels like "There's nothing new under the sun", just new fools making the same old mistakes.

@shanen

You need other people's mistakes to learn from your own.

Rarely does the "over and over again" method work, unless the mistake is so obviously painful that you recognise the problem immediately.

Say, you always feel like you are upsetting someone when you animatedly chat with them, but you do not know why.

It needs someone else to upset them, while you silently watch, for you to make the connection that comment=upset body language.

Interesting questions!

@br00t4c This leaves out the probably important point that the "fifth element" crimes are FEDERAL crimes, not New York crimes, but that this is supposed to be within what the law means.

If it weren't, that law might be pretty toothless, to be frank. Just make sure to pay in New York for crimes elsewhere!

And I remember the National Inquirer specifically testifying (to paraphrase) "What we did was a crime", and Cohen making clear he was being retained as a "fixer", not as a lawyer.

chemoelectric,
@chemoelectric@masto.ai avatar

@br00t4c Trump keeps referring to the (illegal, because it is a campaign contribution) purchase of exclusive story rights as an NDA. He's such a liar.

#Theology nerds here: where would you suggest someone with little or no knowledge of #Christianity should start if they wanted to read the #Bible?

twobiscuits,
@twobiscuits@graz.social avatar

@Peternimmo idk if I'm a theology nerd and idk how relevant it is to "christianity" but for getting an appreciation of the bible, i'd recommend robert alter's commentated translation of genesis. Fascinating. And have them read some other ancient stuff too. By and large I think the characters in the bible are much more complex & rounded than, for example, most of the figures in greek myths. Flawed heroes! It's like they're halfway to inventing the modern novel!

Did you know that "eat the " was first a concept?

Limitarianism is fundamentally the study of when it might be to put limitations on citizens in a governed society. It's a case-based theory, not a political system.

It asks questions like: is ever individual? What is the wealth limit?

& questions it isn't positing, like: If no one is ultra-rich, should no one be ? Is limitarianism virtue or justifiable without perfectionist views?

Thoughts?

Mom and I had a very complicated relationship. I'm not sure what to do with it.

Since I’m on an rant, what if a kid with a horrific congenital brain injury dies? He doesn’t have the mental capacity to accept Jesus, so I’m assuming someone baptizes the kid so he or she is “saved”? What happens? Is the brain damage healed in Heaven and the kid suddenly is normal, speaks and thinks just like the rest of us. What kind of implication does that mean? Is our ADHD taken from us, so we are normal? Is that facial birthmark which embarrassed and defined us for decades carelessly removed? Do castrated molesters get their penis back because they repented at the 11th hour? What’s that guy like in Heaven?

“How would the average react if his daughter got ? Will he pray to ?”

When my now 30-year-old son was a baby, his mother and I had reason to suspect he had a brain tumor. As it turned out, he didn’t: what he had was a benign fluid cyst that looked remarkably like a certain kind of tumor on x-rays and MRIs. It took the most specialized of specialists, the Air Force’s only pediatric neuro-radio-oncologist, to figure it out. That was a terrifying couple of weeks.

I did all kinds of stuff during that time. I studied the subject, taking advantage of the medical library at the base hospital where I worked. I talked with military and civilian specialists about treatment and prognosis. I discussed options and plans with his mother. I braced myself for the horrifying conversation I expected to have with my parents when I told them what was happening to their only grandchild.

You know what I didn’t do? Pray.

See, I worked in the ER. I saw a lot of prayer. Patients praying for relief of pain. Their families praying for their survival. And chaplains praying for the souls of the dead. Because the patients’ and families’ prayers never made any difference at all.

But most of our patients survived, and left the hospital reasonably healthy and whole. It wasn’t prayer that accomplished that outcome. It was our knowledge and skill. The hard work of the medics and nurses and physicians—not just taking care of patients, but for our whole careers. Late nights and early mornings, endless hours of study and practice.

Many of my colleagues prayed too. They wanted God to guide their hands, and they believed that praying would help make that happen. I’m fine with that: whatever works for you. Me, I’ll put my trust in what I can see and touch. A whole lot of people are walking around today because that trust was warranted. I have no idea if God was there when I was working on them … but I know I was.

So fuck you for turning other people’s very real pain and fear and death into an excuse to evangelize. If you ever need care, I’ll give it, because I’m a better person than you. God won’t save you, but I will. Chew on that for a while: I hope it tastes like ashes in your filthy mouth.

Understanding microfascism: reading Deleuze and Guattari alongside management guru texts
Sideeq Mohammed (2019) Culture and Organization

"the desire for fascism, power, conformity, and rule-following of which Deleuze and Guattari speak offers a productive way of understanding the success of the management guru and the broader allure of the management advice industry."

"‘Why did the masses desire fascism?’ ... Posed in the context of their attempts to develop a more robust conceptualization of ‘desire’ as a psychosocial force, they suggest that ‘only microfascism provides an answer to the global question: why does desire desire its own repression, how can it desire its own repression?’ (Deleuze and Guattari 2005, 215)"
