As the unofficial accidental family historian, relatives frequently send me old photos, albums and other items. I find inspiration in 1 Giant Leap while working on family history stuff..

We are representatives of a long line of people
And we cart them around everywhere”

"While spacewalking I realized something, I used to think I was scared of heights but now I know I was just scared of gravity"

― NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman

An astronaut in a white spacesuit with red markings conducts a spacewalk outside the International Space Station, with the Earth’s curvature, blue oceans, reddish-brown desert terrain, and thick white clouds visible in the background.

@wonderofscience Developed an irrational fear of heights in my 30s or 40s. Fully strapped into a harness and still can’t stomach 20 feet. But, hanging off the wing of a Cessna while skydiving? No problems at all.

Stupid brain. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

A client I started working with in 2015 just sent me the nicest email after doing some Wordpress upgrades and short security review:

"Thank you so much. I appreciate it more than I can say.
We’ve never met but you are one of a handful of people I trust!”

I’ve always felt that trust is one of the most, if not the most, important aspect of a relationship, both personal and work related.

If you follow me, you will often see lulls in my PHP/Laravel posts. These are times when I just can’t get to doing what I love most about working on a computer. Day job etc takes me away from it all, sometimes for much longer than I wish. I guess I should write in my bio I do sysops as well?

Possibly naïve question… can we embed a Mastodon post into a site, like others can do with X?

phpc.social is now on Mastodon 4.2.9, released a little over 3 hours ago. We're also taking this opportunity to run OS updates, so will have a brief blip as the server reboots shortly.

@ian Thank you Ian, for all you do for phpc.social. Very much appreciated.

Been using mailbox.org for awhile now, and really like it. Only setbacks for me from loving it are:

  1. No 2FA
  2. a lot of cypto spam gets through

We appear to be wasting more and more time fighting scammers and spammers. Today is the endless “Reset Your Apple ID” scam. It’s mentally debilitating and they know it https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/03/mfa-fatigue-attack-targets-iphone-owners-with-endless-password-reset-prompts/

We blocked Anthropic’s ClaudeBot across the 6,000 sites we host at 7:55 this morning. On our busiest server this caused traffic to drop from a peak of 493 requests per second to just 90:

@kate For anyone using fail2ban, it is trivial to block claudbot. Happy to share if anyone interested, I could do a quick write up.

I see there’s a “hack” to use Google search without AI by appending udm=14 or something to the URL. Pretty sure this ”hack” is easier: Stop using Google.

Give DDG or Mojeek a try. The results may pleasantly surprise you!!

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@webcodingcafe For the past year or so I’ve been using DDG, and sometimes mojeek. Occassionally if I am trying to find help with an odd app/php/linux issue, and DDG can’t find an answer I’ll rever to Google. TBH though, Google for me at least has sucked horribly in comparison. Bing white label or not, DDG has done better for me at least. Can’t speak to others experience of course :)

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@webcodingcafe Seeing some good blog post answers in the results on DGG and mokeek. Definitely less ads!

VS Code or PHPStorm? 🤔

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@tjventurini Depends… PHPStorm for laravel and other framework projects. VS Code for small single file scripts, or small frameworkless projects and testing quick one offs. No reason you can’t use both right?

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@ntha @tjventurini There are some pretty freekin’ awesome PHP developers out there using VS Code who are quite professional. And hey, there are some pretty freekin’ awesome developers out there using text editors too. The tool does not make the developer.

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@chrastecky @tjventurini It is yes, but once setup works quite well with little additional configuration. I think I followed Caleb’s tutorial on how to setup VS Code, and it is fairly close to a real IDE. Not as good as PHPStorm, which is why I use it for smaller projects and one off scripts etc.

Another large language model scraper blocked. This graph is from a site which runs a tool generating answers for people doing important research work. The AI scraper sent hundreds of thousands of lookup requests evading rate limits by using about a thousand IPs and pinned multiple webservers at 100% CPU (graph from one attached). This is a massive waste of electricity to train a hallucination machine.

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@haifisch @beasts These are all small sites that don’t run on load balanced VMs with auto scaling. Under normal and even heavier unexpected traffic loads, and other bots, the sites do fine. Claudebot hitting from over 500 ip addresses relentlessly does the sites in. One could call it a scaling problem, but that puts the onus on the site owner and absolves the bad bots of any wrong doing.
