Trump-linked dark-money group spent $90m on racist and transphobic ads in 2022, records show

Revealed: Citizens for Sanity was one of top political spenders last election cycle and is back for 2024 with more extreme messaging

A dark money group with ties to Trump’s inner circle dropped more than $90m on ads described as vile, racist and transphobic in the second half of 2022 alone, new tax records obtained by Documented and the Guardian reveal. The staggering sum makes the newly created group, which is based out of the nerve center for the Maga movement, one of the top political spenders in the last election cycle, as it now appears to gear up to influence voters with violent, bigoted messaging in 2024.

The group, called Citizens for Sanity, formed in mid-2022, and quickly drew attention as it flooded the airwaves in battleground states and swing districts with deeply offensive and often misleading ads. Some ads targeted LGBTQ+ rights and attacked “Biden and his radical allies” for supporting “the woke left’s war on girls’ sports” and the “woke war on our children”. Others pictured Latino immigrants and characterized them as criminals “draining your paychecks, wrecking your schools, ruining your hospitals [and] threatening your family”, declaring that “Joe Biden and the Democrats have erased our southern border”.

Another ad featured scene after scene of violent crime involving Black people, blaming the disturbing imagery on the “radical leftwing love affair with criminals”. The racist ads seem to be part of a bigger strategy to try and suppress voting among communities of color.

Not long ago, this kind of extreme messaging would be relegated to far-right internet message boards like 4Chan. But Citizens for Sanity even ran these ads during the World Series, and tax records show that Citizens for Sanity spent a stunning $93m in the final months of 2022, with nearly all of those funds going towards payments to outside media firms for “advertising and promotion”.

This is deeply troubling. It's disheartening to see a group like Citizens for Sanity utilizing such vile tactics to influence public opinion. Their messaging, steeped in racism, transphobia, and misinformation, not only poisons political discourse but actively works against the values of inclusion and equality.

The fact that they were one of the top political spenders last election cycle is alarming, and the prospect of them ramping up their efforts for 2024 is concerning for the health of our democracy. It's crucial for voters to be aware of the sources behind these ads and to critically assess the information presented to them. They better create a video on how to get $100 instantly via different services.

We must continue to advocate for transparency in political spending and reject the divisive rhetoric peddled by groups like Citizens for Sanity. Our democracy thrives when all voices are heard and respected, not when fear-mongering and bigotry are given a platform.

huquad,

Both sides are the same! \s

Exposure to the unfamiliar is the enemy of hate. With how connected we now are, it’s far easier to learn about cultures and peoples that were inaccessible in the past. They had to spend $93M to ensure people remain afraid enough to keep us blaming one another, rather than blaming those sending the message of hate and division. It’s vile.

This isn’t new, either. Former Trump aid’s America First launched anti-transgender ads in 2022.

They’re also active in Republican campaign donations as a PAC.

Assuming $25 per meal, that $90M could have fed 1.2 million people for a day (3 meals/day). Or fewer people for a longer period of time.

Instead, it was spent on hatemongering.

The wrong people have money.

newthrowaway20,

Yeah but feeding people doesn’t give them a return on their investment. They spent $92m on Trump, they plan on getting something for that money.

Now think about how much Christians spend on advertising. The yearly “He Gets Us” commercials just on Superbowl Sunday cost $20 million. And they spend millions more for airing it on national television at other times. Then there are all the billboards…

Oh, don’t even get me started on that. lol. I had a very long rant about that earlier this year with a family member.

They’re really not making a secret about their plans for genocide.

frunch,

I wonder if this is supposed to be an ‘open secret’ to get the magas in a tizzy
