whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

ohhhhh, the reason i couldn't find any device-specific code in the binary i was reverse-engineering is because it was all living in encrypted lisp blobs

that makes sense

chfour,
@chfour@wetdry.world avatar

@whitequark excuse me in what

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar
chfour,
@chfour@wetdry.world avatar

@whitequark steelseries??

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@chfour steelseries golisp.

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

but hey now i know how to update the firmware!

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

what the heck is Avnera

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

zero google results for "avnera av3395"

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar
whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

well fuck you too, Frederick G. Weiss

miodvallat,
@miodvallat@hostux.social avatar

@whitequark The "Av" in "Avnera" stands for "Avoid".

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@miodvallat their audio hardware works really well though, not just the best of anything I've tried in my life, but by a massive margin

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@whitequark skyworks bought them and now they make "analog system on chips for AI" which tracks with this brand of NDA nonsense 🙄

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@whitequark this is possibly of use if they reused the same design across series

https://github.com/Prehistoricman/AV7300

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland yeah I'm currently looking at it... both binaries have the same mouthfeel but I can't tell yet if it's really the same ISA or just a variation

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland i don't think it is the same ISA and also the plugin fails to load in IDA. i don't know IDA and don't have a copy of it anyways, but i can give you the unpacked binaries

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

by the way, and incidentally fuck you Frederick G. Weiss and your associates, the key for decrypting the SteelSeries .edevice blobs is:

+T0mc(}@GOc4j9]C}K)=J)TS4WnLI0@!=qi5&xX]#&/ix5Og[pg7moE4NqZzh{?pw48)NlU$y3^[I#j9DNEMKvkQM2Z6X67RJKwhWsI#m1mu5/Q2ZPF78Kz=U5f

dearmor the blob, put it all in openpgp.ReadMessage, you can now enjoy the lisp blobs that have the programming algorithms for firmware updates and other "trade secrets" of Avnera

meow :3

T0xF03AE,

@whitequark

+T0mc(}@GOc4j9@C}K)=J)TS4WnLI0@!=qi5&~xX]#RB#&/ix5O~g[pg7moE4NqZzh{?pw48)NlU$y3^[I#j9DNEMKvkQM2Z6X67RJKwhWsI#m1mu5/Q2ZPF78Kz=U5f

I assume @mastodon.social is not part of the key...

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@T0xF03AE i should've base64'd it or something

whitequark, (edited )
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

(I don't think Frederick G. Weiss cares anymore; I can imagine he's enjoying his comfortable retirement on some of the $400m that Skyworks bought Avnera for)

(I have no issue with SteelSeries who almost certainly did not implement this out of a desire for secrecy but rather were forced to by their agreements with their suppliers. fortunately I'm not bound by those so I can do whatever. it's for interoperability!)

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

it beats me why so many people care, almost nobody can make a good use of this information

krono,
@krono@toot.berlin avatar

@whitequark But it is refreshing to see that somebody cares who can

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@krono I'm just some angry catgirl with control issues

hughsie,
@hughsie@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark hears you in fwupd... 🙂

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@hughsie heh, that could potentially be useful, but my headset for example has only ever had a single firmware released... as far as i know anyway. it's the same one they ship from factory

puppygirlhornypost,
@puppygirlhornypost@transfem.social avatar

@whitequark bc fuck blobs? NVIDIA alone can do some actions I won't describe here. Most of these companies sell firmware updates as part of a support contract, I mean look at HPE. they're notorious for that. It's always based to drop blobs and give back access to the hardware. i don't own a steelseries but to anyone who needs that at least now they have it. there's been times I've been stumped and could not do anything with hardware i had due to stupid shit like this.

zopieux,
@zopieux@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark It's for the principle – and sticking it to the industry pachyderms. Thanks!

@whitequark with the disfigured G and W in his signature, I read it as Frederick Scheiss - translating to Frederick Shit

...so I hope mister shitty didn't screw up your endeavors :P

niconiconi,

@whitequark I had a meme short story about these practices - Alice's Datasheets: https://niconiconi.neocities.org/fiction/alice-datasheet/

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@niconiconi too depressing to finish reading

@whitequark

A device driver written in Lisp? Interesting choice. What device is this for?

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@argv_minus_one SteelSeries Arctis 1 Wireless, in my case
