Some of y'all are still confused as to why it seems that Silicon Valley billionaires are "turning to Trump." That's because you don't listen to Black people, you disrespect poor white people, and you ignore obvious statistics that have been staring you in the face for decades.

Silicon. Valley. Billionaires. Have. Always. Supported. Trump.

Not because they like the tax breaks. Because they are more likely to be racist, and racism is the greatest predictor of Trump support.

@mekkaokereke As @ai6yr has written plumbers and similar are often extremely far right and many of them are fairly well off and did not go to college.

This is a chart of direct and indirect deaths that happened during each US presidency since WW2 due to combat. The data is approximate as any data of this sort must be and comes from the best sources I can find online. The list of countries in which these deaths occurred is a very long list.

franktaber,
@franktaber@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr I will admit I spent far too much time preparing the data and not enough making the chart.

franktaber,
@franktaber@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr My mistake I will fix.

franktaber,
@franktaber@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr Also many of the indirect deaths during Johnson II were in Indonesia supported by the US.

franktaber,
@franktaber@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr During Vietnam it was from all of the arms flowing to different groups in the region and to allied pseudo governments. During Bush I and Iraq it was ambiguous as many of the deaths were somewhat directly attributable to the war but somewhat not. Tricky to put them in a category.

As I mentioned in another post in many of these instances the UK and other countries were directly or indirectly involved as well. A similar chart could be made for UK prime ministers and for many other countries as well.

This chart is a useful piece of information for those who are thinking about and care about US foreign policy and the choices made over the years in each presidential administration. And the consequences that this has for people all over the world.

franktaber,
@franktaber@mas.to avatar

What this chart tells me is surprisingly Biden is the second best on foreign policy among US presidents in 70 years. That is not what I would have expected given how mad everyone is at him.

I just realized that there is so much noise about and very little about creating template legal policies that instances can adopt that prohibit commercial use of user data.

Whatever you think of defederation there are easy ways to do that. Legal policies on the other hand are complex and require expertise and often money.

Maybe can help crowdsource templates of strict noncommercial legal policies for the so instance admins do not have to figure it out themselves?

Hard to follow posts from Mastodon. I decided to follow @nostupidquestions to try it out and each comment that someone posts shows up as a boost and only sometimes is threaded. Time to check out .

Request: novels recommendations for young adults that are not set in a capitalist or feudal culture. Could be or or or any other genre. Preferably not one that is about fighting a capitalist system nor a dystopian novel but instead one where the lives of the characters takes place in a wholly different culture.

The scale of the Uyghur genocide is so vast but so difficult to report on that I think many of us have forgotten entirely about it. The last boost was a reminder.

It has been taking place for over a decade with the government of China systematically locking up and torturing and sterilizing and organ harvesting and killing and using as slave labor millions of people. Most of it out of the eye of worldwide media and with little discussion on social media and seldom a protest anywhere.

Since I was discussing in another thread here are some articles backing up what I was saying that he is like a cross between Joe Rogan and Trump and worse than Biden on Gaza.

"Robert F. Kennedy Jr. offered staunch support for Israel in a Reuters interview, calling it a “moral nation” that was justly responding to Hamas provocations with its attacks on Gaza and questioning the need for a six-week ceasefire backed by President Joe Biden." 1/

Does anyone have a suggestion of a recent well researched and well credentialed editorial on and the likely long term impact it will have on society? I am looking for something that is more serious than a blog post maybe like the recent John Snow editorial that was about covid in general.

@NoahH @CassandraZeroCovid @GhostOnTheHalfShell @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs I do not mean mocking online. Online discussion is useful. Fighting with authoritarians online is pointless. I mean mockery in person. Fighting them physically in person is what they want. It then looks like two equal and violent sides to the apolitical onlooker. Mockery in person weakens them because they have no response to it.

Every day I see people trying to catch Musk in his own hypocrisy or fact check some authoritarian conservative politician. But they do not care about hypocrisy. It is about power. They are happy to wield power unfairly.

As the old authoritarian saying goes "For my friends everything, for my enemies the law."

Is inefficient server software compared with other software or other software for non Fediverse services? Computers are very powerful these days and it seems that it should be much faster than it is both on the server side and the user side.

We may need new ways of teaching history to subsequent generations. Narrative history centers individuals and usually only those with wealth or power.

What then is the role of social networks and not just the technological kind?

We need new ways to talk about social change as springing forth from communities and cultures and dynamics of a society. This decenters the powerful while also reminding us all of our agency.

Any book recommendations?

Has anyone built a bluesky scraper yet that republishes posts from there to Mastodon in a way that can be followed? There is only one person I read left on twitter and nitter works for that and there are two people I used to read who are now on bluesky but I do not have an account and do not want to make one.

A great old post from @anildash
I really liked this:

▪ Is the idea grounded in a bedrock principle, based on humanity and compassion?
▪ Is the idea so simple to understand that people can articulate it to one another, even if they're not trained advocates?
▪ Is the purpose so obviously broadly beneficial that everyone can understand how it helps them or someone they care about?
▪ Is the goal so clear that everyone can tell if it has been achieved yet?
