Howdy!

I mostly post goofy videogame clips. I also like chatting about games, whenever an interesting topic comes up.

I'm doing stuff with Godot, but I rarely post about it. I also like drawing, but I often feel discouraged to do it more.

Whats the simplest way to detect if a value is increasing or decreasing in C++ ? #indiedev #gamedev #UE5 #UnrealEngine5

mezz,

@DavitMasia Make it accessible only through setters and getters, then make the setter emit a delegate whenever the value changes.

Guten Morgen, Freunde.

Another public holiday. And more Valheim.

Yes, I'm just as addicted as before. Mostly, I've been constructing a new base for the main game, and since we played together yesterday (yay!), I could tackle the construction of a new kitchen/bedroom hall/tower today. Even survived two Events (draugr / trolls).

It's not an architectural marvel, but I am rather proud of it.

And now I'll give Sun some much deserved attention.

@Firlefanz I'm loving that little balcony, looks very cozy :cat_sip:.

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@Firlefanz I haven't gotten around to it yet, I've been playing with my coop group this weekend.

I built a treehouse near a mine we were working on to spend the nights in. All three of my friends have managed to die by falling after waking up and sprinting outside too fast haha.

Graphical installers are cool I guess, but have you ever guided someone new to through an Arch installation remotely, by SSHing into their installation medium and watching them go through the setup in a shared screen session :cat_sip:

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds We did a whole "training" run through a VM first before we touched their actual machine, so they wouldn't lose their cool when they needed it the most. The only dangerous part was partitioning and formatting the drives really.

Also I hear nowadays the goto "Arch but with an installer" distro is EndevaourOS. I've heard Manjaro isn't all that great at all.

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds I mean on Arch you can have any desktop environment you really want. It doesn't come with a default one and you can customize it to look pretty much any way you want.

From my little endevaour install I did, you could install a good number from the installer as well.

Guten Morgen!

Fun thing happened this morning.

It's quiet outside. City is still asleep, clearly. I'm up early, sitting on the balcony, enjoying birdsong and the scream of seagulls.

It's very peaceful, except for a ship tooting its horn every few minutes out in the fjord. I don't mind, it's kind of cool.

Very sleepy, very grumpy noise from next door: "Hey. It's a public holiday, could you quit that?!"

@Firlefanz This is the most german thing I've read all week.

Firlefanz, to random

And Valheim...

I am so freaking proud of my new base. It's really lovely and I had so much fun building it.

This game has such potential for creativity. The building blocks are much like Lego, really. And playing it helps me gain more confidence with problem solving, project management and tenaciousness. Never thought I'd get that much out of a simple game.

Have a look at my base. No, it's not perfect, but it's mine, as they say.

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@Firlefanz One thing I really like about the game, is that many of the nice things you build actually serve a tangible purpose.

Whether it's boat docks, cart roads, chimneys, bridges, they are all fun to build, but you don't make them just for the sake of it, and that's part of what makes Valheim so satisfying haha. Especially in coop, when you can share tasks with other people and come and check out each other's progress :cat_uwu: .

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@Firlefanz Yea, organizing coop becomes exponentially harder the more people are involved. Especially across timezones :scaredycat:.

When building a bridge, do make sure to build it high enough for a boat to pass through, if you wanna keep using the river for sea traffic. It's a fun little building challenge that took me several (ingame) days haha. Corewood helps a lot.

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@Firlefanz Corewood enables for so much great building on water haha. I made an entire floating house on a pier, that has quite a cosy vibe. Unfortunately I have to move to the swamp soon and build a new one, which is gonna be quite the undertaking, since the leeches will probably gnaw through my supports :scaredycat: .

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@Firlefanz I ... actually don't know. I've only been doing expeditions into the swamp, but haven't really tried to settle down in it yet. I did find the next boss though, so my plans are to build a forward outpost there soon. Probably with a biiiiiiiig fence.

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@Firlefanz They certainly are. I've been hesitant to use them, because I just enjoy boating everywhere (and using my boat house), but I'm slowly starting to be a bit more pragmatic in using them haha.

Here's a picture of my Black Forest home during a storm :cat_sip: .

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@Firlefanz I thought of using "portable portals" too haha, but I actually enjoy being caught in places at night and planning ahead. Also leaves me with more room for loot :cat_sip:.

I do wanna build a portal hub though, just haven't had a good idea where to build it and how to structure it yet. At the moment I just have three portals in my boat house that I just jammed in where I had space.

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@Firlefanz I did find an odd lone island in the middle of the ocean or two, could make for a nice isolated base haha. I did just unlock stone building, so I could make a nifty witch tower in the middle of nowhere, would make for a nice landmark.

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@Firlefanz You could lure it away with a boat, they like to chase you through the ocean haha.

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@Firlefanz True haha, although I've turned raids off for my singleplayer world. They're more fun in a group though :cat_sip:.

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@Firlefanz The main issue I had with raids was, I would spend a LOT of time building or dealing with the farm, so every time raids happened I was in the middle of a project and got annoyed haha. I also hear that some of the late game raids just become ridiculous.

The UK petition for is now live, if you're eligible to sign, consider it.

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/659071/signatures/new

If you haven't heard about it yet, it's a legal/political campaign to make game publishers obliged to give you the means to keep playing (online) games you paid for, after they shutdown their official servers forever.

If you're not a UK citizen/resident, consider checking out this site: https://www.stopkillinggames.com/

Fellow speakers who play and talk about in german. I'm in the process of translating a mod right now and I think I need some opinions.

Would you translate "host" (as in someone who hosts a lobby or server) as "Gastgeber" or does it sound "too german"? Is "host" enough of a common word that you wouldn't question it in a german sentence?

@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

Why is it that there is no version / distribution of that does exactly what does? Well, without the bad aspects like spying on you.

I wonder if Microsoft is somehow suppressing this possibility… otherwise everyone would be using Linux 🤷

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@elduvelle I mean, what is there that Windows does, that Linux can't as far as just features go?

The main reason why Linux has been struggling in the desktop space, is simply that there are many companies that don't care to support Linux, and as such you just get a plain more painful experience trying to do the same things.

It's not really Linux's fault, but rather that of a self perpetuating monopoly. If enough people actually make the jump eventually, this can look VERY different.

mezz, to ProjectWingman
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

Today I finally got to play some in . I may now be completely spoiled when going back to playing flight sims on a desktop haha.

Just simply being able to look around freely in your cockpit changes how these play so much. When tracking planes flying right over your head, your hands just kinda know what to do and will fly towards where you look, it's crazy :cat_sip:.

Also, I am already liking PW a lot more than AC7.

Project Wingman gameplay in VR The first clip shows some basic shooting down enemies with plain missiles after a short chase. The second clip shows an engagement with what I believe is a bomber. I shoot it while passing with the machine gun, but don't quite kill it. After some fancy turning maneuvers i shoot it from right above. The third clip is just landing on an airfield.

mezz,

@cadeybunny Yea, I played both that and the original SNES game. I liked the vibe of the setting a lot. Hope I get to play it some day in a TTRPG setting. Or TTRPGs in general again.

I managed to get - Codename 47 running on Linux. It took about an hour of tinkering, but I found what I needed on PcGamingWiki and ProtonDb.
Even got the widescreen patch and sound working.
Not sure if I'm actually going to replay this one, because it's very much a "find the solution to this puzzle" game.
Where you have tons of options in how to approach situations in the later games, this one is pretty limited.
But then again, it's always good for a shot of nostalgia. 🤩

Inconspicuous as all hell, 47 is placing a car bomb. No disguise, right in front of the enemies. Mild spoiler: this isn't going to end well.
47 is looking at real 2000's graphics -- upscaled and cheated into oblivion with a widescreen patch and modified draw distance. There's a truck and an excavator which look half decent, but the city skymap in the distance looks like muddy hot garbage.
47 posted on a rooftop. He's holding a sniper rifle and staring down at a little pagoda housing a Buddha statue in a park. His victim will arrive soon. The park is barely visible through all the fog limiting draw distance.

mezz,
@mezz@mstdn.games avatar

@mforester I mean stable more as in like, it makes sense why you would be detected or not, unlike Silent Assassin, which felt like you could blow your disguise by just looking the wrong way.
