Eye surgery in the morning. Gonna likely be off line for a bit.

Tonight I went out with a friend to do what I’ve started describing as our ‘comfort walk’ - it’s a fun, simple 8 miles or so on a route we know well and love. It’s healing to have a proper heartfelt catch-up, and in between Big Life Updates I really enjoy the ritual of having almost scripted, familiar chat as we pass each of our favourite landmarks.

My kingdom for a true 5K 120Hz+ refresh rate Thunderbolt 4 monitor.

This 60Hz nonsense is hurting my eyes!

pilky,
@pilky@mastodon.social avatar

@tonyarnold Yeah, im at the point now where I’d rather do scaled 5k on a 4K 120Hz monitor than true 5k at 60

pilky,
@pilky@mastodon.social avatar

@tonyarnold Yeah. I currently have a 28” 4K @ 144Hz scaled to 5K as my primary monitor, with two 27” 1440p at 60Hz as my secondary.

Unless you’re working with a lot of 1px lines close to each other then from a normal viewing distance it’s hard to tell the difference with true 5K. However it is easy to see the difference vs 60Hz.

I wrote about it in more detail a few years ago https://pilky.me/4k-vs-5k-displays/

Finding it very hard to feel sympathy for these parents complaining about the Labour plan to change VAT rules for private schools.

@ianRobinson I can understand the whole “how will we find them a state school place if there are no places in our area” part, which obviously needs to be addressed, but the rest of that video just reinforces the need to curtail private schools

Looking at the new Copilot + PC specs I hope they push Apple to move to a minimum of 16GB of RAM on M4 Macs (especially given how much more powerful the GPU and NPU are)

Are there any API design best practices about error handling?

So far, I sketched everything with Result<Value,Error> so I get typed errors.

But both stack unwinding and the lack of ceremony of throws is appealing, too. API consumers probably don't need fine grained detail which of the 20 error cases occurred.

pilky,
@pilky@mastodon.social avatar

@ctietze Usually I’d only use Result for an async API, so I’ve mostly been switching to async await so I can use throws instead. The only remaining places would be anywhere I need an NSOperation

That both the Israeli government and Hamas are complaining about the ICC requesting arrest warrants against their leaders for war crimes and crimes against humanity shows how much they worry about them (as they should)

pilky,
@pilky@mastodon.social avatar

I believe it also means that, if the warrants are granted, the 5 people mentioned basically can’t travel anywhere in Europe, Australasia, and most of Africa and the Americas without being arrested

Vision Pro's international launch will be even tougher now that we know the device is two whole chip generations behind the iPad, and we've seen Apple's lackluster content/release cadence for it.

It desperately needs a whole lot more developer support and that doesn't come for free. Once that interest dies out…

Incidentally, forScore is the closest thing I've seen to a killer app

One thing I don’t get: what’s the downside of Apple allowing macOS to run in a VM on iPad? It doesn’t take anything away from those who don’t want to use it. You just ignore the feature and keep using your iPad as-is.

Apple doesn’t even need to build it themselves, just allow the tech they already have to run and be allowed on the App Store, that way someone like Parallels can come along and provide it (which would also allow Linux, Windows, etc)

pilky,
@pilky@mastodon.social avatar

@lapcatsoftware I’m meaning the downside that causes people other than Apple to dismiss the idea

Tesla has texted or called me at least 10 times in the last month to offer incentives if I lease a new car with them after my Model Y ends at the start of May. They are quite litterally desperate.

If I chose to re-up with them I could get quite a deal. I’ve told their reps multiple times I won’t support Tesla as along as Elon Musk is the CEO of the company. Gotta wonder how long Tesla shareholders will put up with him in charge. https://mastodon.online/@electrek/112201815082910986
