I'm ripping the band-aid off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJOfyMCEzjQ

sammydee,

@TechConnectify Good video. I recently rented an electric car on a vacation trip, and it was an eye-opening experience. I had owned a Tesla in the past and was familiar with the basics, so when Thrifty gave me the choice of "wait another hour for a car, we're out" or "take the electric one sitting right there" I took it. Naturally it was only charged to 100 miles, so I immediately had to sort out charging for my vacation.

Having to remember with no prep which charging networks existed, downloading their apps, figuring out where to charge, setting up accounts, Etc was rather stressful. I sorted it, but in the process my traveling partner became convinced that electric cars were complicated and she vows she will never own one.

This has to become much easier. I haven't heard talk about the rental car scenario. During the transition people's first experience with electric cars may be via rentals. Hopefully in the future they won't turn people off of the concept entirely as this one did.

Can we talk about how Ortegas' contribution to the musical was basically "My name is Erica Ortegas and I fly the ship"?

sammydee,

@StephensTrek1 While it's never overtly stated, I wonder if they are intentionally giving Ortegas a light load because of the actor's ongoing struggle with getting over the death of their partner.

I've been trying Threads, but I deleted the app last night. It is just too frustrating that hashtags and search don't work. There's no way to find what you want to engage with. It just shows influencers and outrage influencers.

sammydee,

@bryanhansel If you follow folks it does a really good job of showing you the folks you follow (especially in the "followers" tab). If you don't engage with it to follow folks then yeah, you see random stuff.

sammydee,

@bryanhansel I guess the more you put into it the more you get out of it. I find it useful and fun, once I set up my followers. For photography I'm sure Instagram is better - that's it's target market, of course. It's early days, but I'm having a lot more fun on Threads than I have on Twitter for many years.

Have you googled "meteorites" lately?

If not, give it a go, and let me know what happens. I'm assuming this happens for everyone, might be browser dependent etc.

It might be "old news" to some, but it was new to me... and, I thought it was fun!

sammydee,

@level98 Fun!

Yeah, just the other day, they closed a deal for $8 million in funding. A few days later Threads drops, a painful reminder that they shouldn’t have skipped the clause about the dangers of high risk tech Investments.

sammydee,

@shoq 8 million won't lease the servers they would need to compete with Threads, much less all the software innovation they would need to scale by three orders of magnitude. They're done.

@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

Almost every time somebody responds to me from the fediverse, it's almost always worth reading. Twitter was the opposite most of the time. Threads seems to be following that model, with fewer Nazis (for now). I can't tell with Bluesky because so few ever respond at all. It's like being a wall, trying to talk to all the other other walls, and expecting interesting responses.

sammydee,

@shoq We can't get into BSKY to see. I've been waiting for an invite for months. It seems unlikely to get to critical mass at this point, with Threads taking all the air out of the room already.

sammydee,

@Reva @OsakaWilson If there's war, there are refugees. If there are refugees there are wealth discrepancies. If there are wealth discrepancies there will be commerce (under the table or over). If there is commerce there will be money. Seems pretty unavoidable. The Galaxy can be a utopia or it can have war, but it can't have both. Star Trek has war, therefore... :)

WTF... To delete #Threads you also have to delete #Instagram

“I deactivated my threads account already but it turns out you can’t delete your threads account without also deleting your Instagram account so maybe just don’t sign up!”

sammydee,
sammydee,

@mastodonmigration Important to focus on legit awful business practices vs minor short term inconveniences. (In my case I have a Facebook account already so it doesn't matter.) :) You may not believe it, but I'm actually trying to help your cause. Focus on the important stuff, not the minor things they'll likely fix next week.

sammydee,

@mastodonmigration Kbin is new and very incomplete, too ... can't say that speaks to their "inherently evil ways". New software is ... new. Sky is blue. Focus on the long term things.

As a science communicator, I was interested to explore .

So far, it feels like everyone is shouting everything all at once with no organization or order. There are no hashtags to help discover topics, for example. I mainly see a lot of celebs & influencers I don’t follow.

I’m not sure it can become a place to exchange meaningful ideas. But that’s probably not the point.

I’m happy at & there really is no comparison. It will be interesting to see how it all evolves over time.

sammydee,

@Sheril It's VERY early days and rushed. The timeline is insane UNTIL you actually follow people, then it calms down quite a lot. But yeah, wait a couple of weeks and reevaluate it, it's going to mature rapidly. Hopefully.

sammydee,

@BorgDrone @ValueSubtracted As a person with tinnitus, it seemed important to me. Let me know exactly what was going on. It's also very common in video games, for example when someone is dazed by a nearby explosion. Again it conveyed a lot of meaning to me and helped explain what they were going through.

sammydee,

@exscape @ValueSubtracted @UESPA_Sputnik Spoiler alert, please!

This is one of the earliest Sci-Fi themes. See: Nightfall by Asimov (1941).

I thought they covered it well in the ep. (Write things down, write things on YOURSELF, etc).

sammydee,

@exscape @ValueSubtracted @UESPA_Sputnik Yes, I'm reading on Mastodon. Interesting, I may have to stop following the lemmy hashtag. Federation is a fun idea but apparently doesn't work quite right.

sammydee,

@StillPaisleyCat @Calanon She's a modern O'Brien, then. Always in the wrong place at the wrong time without backup. :)

sammydee,
sammydee,

@mastodonmigration Was the language reviewed / created by a lawyer? Does it actually do anything or is it just worded fancy to make non-lawyers think that it does? Best to focus people on things that actually work legally, not hopeful snopes-level magic. Folks post stuff like this to FB itself all the time, legitimately deluded into thinking it works. Best to make the effort here more fact-based than that. :)

sammydee,

@staidwinnow @mastodonmigration Perhaps. And yet it's better to have actual lawyers helping out than well meaning amateurs writing pseudo-legal things. The former MIGHT be useful. The latter clearly won't be.

@mastodonmigration @ohiorob @feditips @supernovae @_dmh "Control", agree. Some folks seem to think "talking to Meta" is unacceptable, which in itself is quite unreasonable. :)

sammydee,

@feditips @mastodonmigration @ohiorob @supernovae @_dmh Having spent the past 45 years in the software industry, I can tell you that your concern over NDAs is overblown. Rampant fear and paranoia over having a conversation under one is not at all justified. Talking is always good.

sammydee,

@feditips @mastodonmigration @ohiorob @supernovae @_dmh It forbids the discussion of THINGS DISCUSSED IN THE MEETING with the public. From the participant's meeting notes it doesn't sound like anything particularly interesting / devious / underhanded was discussed. I'm sure Meta wanted one, just so they could say "hey we're considering how we interact with the Fediverse" or something else equally innocuous. I strongly doubt that in an initial meeting they divulged their plans for world domination or waved around million dollar checks. :) I guess I'll take the word of the person who was actually there over the random fears of those who weren't.

sammydee,

@feditips @mastodonmigration @ohiorob @supernovae @_dmh Guess you'll have to trust the person who was there. Or punish him for not telling you what he had for lunch that day. If instance owners don't trust each other than we're doomed as well.
