You may know I was diagnosed with autism 10yrs ago. You may not know I was also diagnosed with schizophrenia at the same time. Today is World Schizophrenia
Awareness Day (1). Here in so-called Australia, schizophrenia affects between 150,000-200,000 humans (2).

You might know autism and ADHD/ADD are forms of neurodivergence, but did you
know that schizophrenia social anxiety/anxiety disorders and depression are as well?

Neurodivergence means having a different brain to what is historically, clinically and socially classified as “normal”. (shudder)

Fortunately for the neurospicy like me, the Social Model of Disability is seeing medical definitions rewritten with a healthier focus, changing outdated societal ideologies and expectations.

My form of schizophrenia is visceral (3). When I’m tired, stressed, or anxious, my
symptoms can arise despite daily medications. I see, hear, and feel bugs. Flying, buzzing, crawling insects. Bugs creeping on my scalp and into my skin. It’s usually a speck of dust. Sometimes, it’s actually an insect. An offset of my schizophrenia is a cognitive disability (4) (confused thinking, loss of words, disjointed understanding, and
forgetfulness).

There is too much misinformation on how schizophrenia manifests. Science has not discovered irrefutably what causes it; however, mine was likely brought on by excessive stress and poor health maintenance.

When the word “crazy” is so easily used as a gross negative, it paints schizophrenics as bad people with uncontrollable brains leading to dangerous behaviour. We see this stereotype in the media when individuals enact incomprehensible harm (5). More often, the individual is just a massive angry douche. To be clear: people with schizophrenia are rarely violent, and when they are it is usually self-harm (6).

I’m not prone to hyperbole, but every time I hear someone use the term “crazy”
derogatorily, it HURTS me. It means you consider ME suboptimal.

I know language is difficult to change. Hell, I’m almost 50 & struggle with using “crazy”, particularly directed at myself. We stopped using other harmful words in my lifetime, so we can stop using this one too.

So, this was released today. My third stamp with Canada Post. Qarlinngua (The pants). And technically my second stamp with a family member in it, as the tiny figure in it is my son Travis. Now for one with Hilary in it.

I’ve very proud of all of these, beyond the cache. They are about my home, and family. And also my family has a long history with the Post Office, 101 years. My grandfather, father, and brother were all postmasters in Roblin.

This morning we woke at 5:30am to catch the 6:18 sunrise at the spectacular Lake Tyrell salt lake. It is a vast lake, part of which hosts a sustainable salt mining operation. The authorities have also created a road and viewing platforms to encourage photographers. Below it is dawn on the lake.

South Australia's Department of Education has demanded a primary school alters a mural by a First Nation's artist after false claims of anti-semitism.

The school is situated near a culturally significant river that flows into the nearby sea.

Censoring an Aboriginal artist is shameful. The mural is stunning, and has meaning for Aboriginal people of South Australia.

And as a sign of solidarity, First Nations people in Australia have long been combining our sovereignty slogan "Always Was Always Will Be Aboriginal Land" with the Palestinian liberation slogan "From the River to the Sea." The sentiments and visions in both these slogans are similar - for Indigenous people to live safely on their land, caring for land, with self-determination. To claim these words as anything harmful is deceptive.

Here's more information, and suggestions for action > https://mailchi.mp/afopa.com.au/action-alerteducation-department-removes-from-the-river-to-the-sea-from-first-nations-artwork

You may not know this to look at me and my life, but I am an independent, disabled trans artist and survive on the poverty line as I am unable to work.

I am putting my entire savings into my upcoming gala opening because I believe in the power of community. So your philanthropy towards my passion project means everything, even if just $10. Even if you just share this post with your networks. It counts and I am grateful.

Please come support me & all the talent this show highlights. Who knows, I may even win the major prize!

    A screen grab of a video. A white trans man in pink reflective sunglasses and huge over ear headphones is in mid speech. @spika @actuallyautistic such an important share. We are all unique and blanket "help" is redactive.

    Personally, I don't use self-serve checkouts in the supermarket because when they invariably break I don't cope well with trying to get a vacant attendant's attention.

    One size does not fit all & bottom line is that those staff are paid to attend to customers. They should have been helping long before even the suggestion of a meltdown occurred.

    Re last boost: Can I also ask that people add alt text to all their images. I don't have a vision impairment but still find them useful — sometimes they explain a joke or reference I don't get, or if the image doesn't load I can still get an idea of what your toot was about. Everyone benefits.

    tlwvision,
    @tlwvision@aus.social avatar

    @Joshsharp I have an acquired cognitive disability which means that I can see pictures but often don't know what I'm looking at. Descriptive alt-text helps immensely! There are so many reasons for needing alt-text and very few beneficial reasons not to add it.

    tlwvision, to mentalhealth
    @tlwvision@aus.social avatar

    Please, do NOT put down corporate giants (Machiavellian), billionaires (narcissists), journalistic cowboys (liars) etc by using words to describe mental illness and mental health issues. Eg. "loon", "crazy", the "r" word, etc etc (there are so many words out there - you know what they are).

    I've been guilty of this myself for decades even though as a child my father banned those words due to his brother living with cognitive disabilities, but I have been slowly trying to change my societally accumulated ways.

    The use of these words as a negative sinks into the psyche of the people around you and many of us suffer from psychological pains and language is just another thing to weigh us down, making it harder to get out of bed each day.

    Language is a rich tapestry and dictionaries exist, please take the time to expand your vocabulary to eliminate the off-hand, unintentional hurt.

    Thank you 🙏🏼

    IT website question: my partners website only loads on our phones if the WiFi is switched off (on our phones, so we're using our individual data service). On WiFi we get a loading page from goDaddy. We use Chrome on Android phones. I think it's also happening on the laptop (using Chrome). Is there an easy & logical explanation for this?
