tootik is a federated nanoblogging service for the small internet.
tootik allows people to participate in the fediverse using their Gemini, Gopher or Finger client of choice and makes the fediverse lighter, more private and more accessible. tootik's interface strips content to bare essentials (like text and links), puts the users in control of the content they see and tries to "slow down" the fediverse to make it more compatible with the slower pace of the small internet.
It's a single executable that handles both the federation (using ActivityPub) and the frontend (using Gemini) aspects, while sqlite takes care of persistency. It should be lightweight and efficient enough to host a small community even on a cheap server, and hopefully, be easy to hack on.
tootik implements only a small subset of ActivityPub, and probably doesn't really conform to the spec.

Captive #dolphins and #whales are transported across the world to #aquariums and #MarineParks. These animals are ripped away from their families and all they know, forced to live in barren concrete #tanks. Transportation is a stressful process for these animals. The journey itself poses significant risks. Stress-induced illnesses and health problems are an issue and in the worst cases it can lead to death. When transported,
sometimes for hours, dolphins and whales are forced to lay immobile in small transportation containers without natural light and air.
Wild dolphins live in highly complex #social structures and travel many miles a day. They use a complicated system of clicks and whistles to communicate with one another and echolocation to navigate and hunt. #Captivity confines these self-aware animals to small, sterile tanks. With little to no stimulation and insufficient space to roam,
it is far removed from their natural #environment. Dolphins kept in captivity are known to suffer from stress-related health issues and illnesses. Confining these animals to lives in tanks is inhumane and selfish.
Join us in asking Members of Congress to amend the #MarineMammalProtectionAct to stop any imports or exports of dolphins across U.S. Borders.
I've been growing some plants emersed, particularly Java ferns. I'm wondering if any of you have tried this and what fertilizers you've found to work the best. I've been using MiracleGro 24-8-16, but I'm not sure if that's the best formula.

Idea for off-shoot magazine (? is that what "subreddits" are called here? Haha) I had:
A space for people to create blogs for their aquariums. I'm in the UK and we have UKAPS as a great forum for people with planted tanks, but I get a bit intimidated by it as they're all generally stunning and healthy in a way that I can never seem to manage. We used to have Practical Fishkeeping forums as a spin off from the (actual, real world) magazine of the same name, and I used to love having a thread on there to update all my rescapes and new stock updates and just share current pictures etc. It was also one of my favourite Sunday morning activities to catch up on all the other blogs people had posted and it was lovely getting to know everyone's tanks and fish and all that community stuff. Anyway, Practical Fishkeeping closed down their forums and now the community is on Facebook, which is fine, but you can't really keep a blog on a Facebook group.
Sorry, a long rambling post, I know. I just miss having a space for blogs to read and write in, so wondered if this could be a new place to start something like that. With a small community it would be easier to really get to know people and follow their journeys, of course it might be too small right now, but just wanted to share some thoughts...
