babypigeon, to news in Municipalities ordered to strip Palestinian children of Belgian nationality

This was all supposedly planned before the events of October 7th, but continuing with the plan regardless of the situation in Gaza just seems like a shitty thing to do. Maybe hold off for a year, or at least a few months…?

tygerprints, to world in Brussels passes bill to prevent purchase of products from Israeli West Bank settlements

All of our countries should be imposing bans on ANTYHING being imported from Israel ever again, and from anything they produce being brought overseas. Israel is a cesspool of murderous hate, and we cannot and should not support hem in any way, in any form, at any time.

Hyperreality, (edited ) to world in Brussels passes bill to prevent purchase of products from Israeli West Bank settlements

For those who are confused, this is the City of Brussels:

The City of Brussels ... is the largest municipality and historical centre of the Brussels-Capital Region, as well as the capital of the Flemish Region (from which it is separate) and Belgium ... As of 1 January 2023, the City of Brussels had a population of 194,291 inhabitants. The total area is 33.09 km2

It's the bit in the middle of Brussels where you can buy waffles and admire a naked boy's urination skills.

dutchkimble,

Buy waffles and what now?

They’re talking about the famous fountain.

Moonrise2473, to world in Brussels passes bill to prevent purchase of products from Israeli West Bank settlements

Does it actually change something? The Brussels city is procuring that many goods from israeli settlements in the west bank? That wouldn’t make a dent even if it was a country-wide ban on all imports

NoneOfUrBusiness,

It's a good start. These things are how we get real action against Israel. Doubly so given that Israel's main economic partners are America and the EU (they can't trade with their neighbors for obvious reasons).

Billy,

they have trade agreements with both egypt and jordan.
and both jordan and mainly egypt import a lot of gas from israel, while jordan also imports a lot of water.

NoneOfUrBusiness,

Okay as an Egyptian this is my first time hearing about this. Let's make that "can't trade much with their neighbors".

Microw,

Iirc EU countries are not supposed to import goods from the settlements anyway, same with from Moroccan occupied West Sahara. But those companies arent exactly transparent and will simply slap a sticker on their product saying “made in Israel/Morocco”.

NoneOfUrBusiness,

Is that the case? AFAIK it's simply that they need to label them as made in settlements and most people don't want to buy or stock Israeli settlement products.

Hyperreality,

Nothing much. This isn't actually the government of Brussels, but just one municipality in the city, the centre bit.

Basically it's a bit like if the government in Islington (London) decided to stop buying stuff from Israel, except Islington has a larger population than the City of Brussels.

It’s definitely not a major player but the ball has to start rolling somewhere. Brussels breaking the ice is a start.

mindlight, to world in Brussels passes bill to prevent purchase of products from Israeli West Bank settlements

So Israel just have to do as Russia does when India and China are helping them to distribute Russian oil.

A company not located in Israeli West Bank purchases products produced by settlers in the Israeli West Bank and rebrands them as not produced in West Bank.

A 12 year old could figure this one out.

juicy,

It’s a start. We should celebrate our wins and push for more.

agent_flounder, to atheism in Catholic Church put up 30,000 children for adoption without mothers' consent
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

Created just after World War Two, institutions run by nuns took in underage girls and pregnant unmarried women until the late 1980s. These women were subjected to unpaid labour, humiliating conditions, and in some cases, sexual abuse.

During childbirth, some women were given general anaesthetic while others had to wear a mask – all ways to prevent mothers from seeing their child, who were immediately separated after birth. Some women were even sterilised. Others were forced to sign a document renouncing their child or were told the child was stillborn.

Just an unending source of evil. JFC.

They claim superior morality and ethics without any evidence to prove that at all. Do not believe the lies of religions. They harm individuals and society, and should not be allowed to exist in their current form.

WHARRGARBL, to atheism in Catholic Church put up 30,000 children for adoption without mothers' consent

The last line of this article: The Church is calling for an independent investigation into the conditions described by the women involved.

Those fucking raping, kidnapping, enslaving, shitstains in robes ALL knew what they were doing, but sure. Let’s investigate our evil millennia of corruption and abuse until every victim has died.

Breezy,

The reason i like the new pope so much, i believe he will have it investigate seriously. Idk if he was already aware but hes been pretty good about removing people.
