IvanOverdrive, to canada in Why dozens of churches in Canada have been torched and burned

What I saw was hugs and kisses for the convoy protesters. At the same time I saw horsey pigs point AR-15s at unarmed Wetsueten in their own houses for the gall of protesting oil pipelines across their land. What more, hundreds of graves of residential school kids were discovered, kids who were literally swept under the rug. If I were native, I’d burn every church to the mother fucking ground.

Thanks for that. I’ll be using that as background noise when I read.

As someone with ADHD this is the only way I can get coding done. I put on usually 3 to 4 noises, at least one of them musical, and set them to a standard slider animation. Duduk Song and the Japanese Oase are two particular favourites, and the vocal generators are all pretty amazing. Oh! And the tuned cave droplets.

I find also it doesn’t tend to become its own distraction. Once I find a group of sounds, the only way to experience them is to put them in the background and let them go while I do other things, so it actually helps me get started.

Donating was a very good use of a few dollars.

refurbishedrefurbisher, to videos in Israel-Hamas War: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

One of the most level-headed takes I’ve seen about the war.

Usually I hear either massively pro Israeli government things, the conflation of Hamas/Palestinians, or outright support for Palestine to be a free country, rarely with any nuance.

Nuance is massively important when discussing almost every issue. It’s a shame to hear so few nuanced voices once war sparks. Not the first time either.

NoneOfUrBusiness,

outright support for Palestine to be a free country, rarely with any nuance.

Uh... How is that a take that needs nuance, exactly?

tryptaminev,

Because the notion of equal and non dissmissable human rights and international rules apparently is a radical take nowadays.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

…Yeah, I probably should’ve specified a two (or three) state solution instead of dissolving Israel and replacing it with Palestine.

VentraSqwal,

Yup I think I’m going to have to share this a lot, especially with a lot of people here in the States that only know that Hamas sucks (which it does) but don’t know the conditions in Gaza or what Israel has done to exacerbate this situation. It’s the best take I’ve heard on the situation so far. That organization of parents of dead kids from both sides was the first thing to give me hope about this conflict in awhile.

The comment the last guy said was especially poignant. “Were going to have to either share this land, or share the graveyard underneath it.”

MajorHavoc, to poc in Jasmine Crockett gives Marjorie Taylor Greene a lesson in "Engaging in Personalities"

One comforting thing about the current crop of US leaders is that the inevitable death that comes for us all doesn’t care how much they weasel and maneuver.

I’m constantly amazed that few of them seem to care what legacy they’re building.

When I’m gone, a bunch of people will remember me, and genuinely miss me. I figure it’ll be a solid half dozen, for sure. Probably dozens, even.

Yes, I’ve invested in people’s lives and welfares a great deal.

But I’ve also just managed to not present myself as incredibly racist or everybody-interesting-phobic.

I think both of those life choices factor into how I’ll be remembered.

I cannot fathom making this much of an ass of myself, perhaps because my mother raised me correctly.

And I’m not setting some high bar here. I make an ass of myself plenty. Just not this much.

Edit: I should clarify, my disgust is with starting this kind of crap while supposedly being a world leader. Shutting someone up who started this kind of crap, I’m all for.

When I saw this this morning, I laughed so hard I almost fell out of bed 😭

Yikes to the fact that Jasmine Crockett received PAC donations from crypto and voted with other Dems to provide military aid to Israel, but at least there’s some entertainment in watching her eat up Republicans like MTG whenever they pull some bullshit like that.

Also, isn’t “butch” kind of an anti-gay slur?

snooggums,
@snooggums@midwest.social avatar

It can be, but I don’t think sexuality was relevant in this exchange about fakeness and feminine/masculine presentation.

MTG used something feminine as an insult and the response was that MTG does something similar but on the masculine end of the spectrum. It sounded to me like she was calling MTG a hypocrit, not gay.

millie,

Butch is one end of a spectrum with femme on the other end. It can be used insultingly, but it’s not anti-gay. If anything it’s extremely gay.

It might be slightly sexist to throw at someone unprompted, but I think it’s pretty fine in this context. It’s not like she’s using it on a trans woman. She’s biting back at another cis woman who attacked her appearance by telling her she looks masculine, showing she can go low too, and is a better at it. She even alliterates literally 6 words in a row during a coherent insult. MTG couldn’t do that if she had all week.

Honestly, the left needs more of this.

peto,

It is a lot like watching two people fight I think. You don’t have to like either of them to enjoy watching them beat each other up, but it isn’t any fun if it is just one person battering the other.

null,

How does one receive donations “from crypto”?

pearsaltchocolatebar,

I mean, crypto.com is a thing and they’re advertising everywhere.

kalanggam, (edited )

I was being a bit brief with that, considering I wrote this comment on my phone, but the full gist is her campaign for the US House received major lift via Super PAC donations aligned with the cryptocurrency industry, including one such PAC run by Sam Bankman-Fried which gave $1 million to her campaign.

Sorry “from crypto” didn’t quite capture it.

null,

I guess I’m still trying to parse out the implication that something is bad simple because “crypto”

kalanggam,

Well, to be more frank, I am wary of cryptocurrency and especially the marketing of it as relief for the ills of capitalism. It doesn’t help that mining for cryptocurrency is highly energy-intensive (much of that power being sourced from fossil fuels) and e-waste-producing, or that it’s simply become a vehicle for high-risk financial speculation as well as run-of-the-mill fraud and scams. In short, to me, cryptocurrency is bad, or at least the negatives outweigh any potential positives.

If you have trouble with that implication, that’s fine, that’s your opinion, but I don’t like having my view reduced down to “bad bcz crypto lol” just because I didn’t sufficiently explain it initially. I don’t post or comment in this community just to be nitpicked or belittled.

null,

I mean, I hear this take often so I challenge it specifically because it tends to boil down to “I’m wary of this thing I don’t know much about”.

Frankly, if you don’t want to be nitpicked for using “crypto” as a bogeyman, then maybe don’t do it?

Who votes for MTG? Do people actually look at her and think “hmmm, she is going to represent me very well. Here is my vote”.

rzlatic,
@rzlatic@lemmy.ml avatar

there are people who fuel their lives with hatred. for such people MTG is just the perfect representative. they don’t care about anything else.

it’s similar in many other countries today, not just the USA.

Nomecks,

In the US, you can either vote for every position on the ballot indvidually (dozens or more, dog catcher to prez), or you can vote “straight ticket” for the party, Dem or Repub. That’s how people like her get elected.

kalanggam,

I don’t think people there love love her, but something something owning the libs something.

Many USian voters are entranced with the idea of having a firebrand provocateur on their side, someone who is able to get a rise out of their political opponents (not even totally excluding myself as it can be entertaining sometimes). And others just don’t care as long as the other side doesn’t win – to them, keeping the other side out of power is more important than putting a competent person in the seat.
