Forbes blogger misses the point completely. News at 11.
Here’s the thing, horsepower means nothing if that’s the only thing the device has. People don’t want just raw performance, there are other soft factors in play, like comfort, convenience, build quality, easy of use, etc. The simple fact that the competitors come with Windows and have no trackpads is already a major turn-off, this by itself makes them inferior products, since Windows notoriously bad with touch-screens, especially when said screen is as small as 7", then there’s the windows updates… Ughh…
Then the compatibility issue. Sure, in theory Windows should be more compatible, in practice… try to run some really old games, like the author casually mentioned. Many will run better with Proton then on Windows itself, if you can make them run at all. Linux already have two excellent library managers, Lutris and Heroic, that make installing non-steam games easier than in Windows, without the need of several resource hogging launchers constantly on the background, so it’s a moot point.
Sure, some multiplayer games don’t run because of the anti-cheat software, but then again, is this really such an issue ? My answer is a big fat NO ! Why ? One word: Gyroscope. Or the lack thereof. Of all 3 devices mentioned in the article, ROG Ally, AyaNeo 2S and Steam Deck, only the deck has it, and guess what, it’s pretty freaking hard to aim properly with sticks in shooter games. Without a gyro, the Ally the 2S players will always be at a disadvantage, which makes the whole endeavor an exercise in frustration, so why bother ?
All in all, a pretty bad, even trollish article. Pretty much what I learned to expect from those Forbes bloggers.
The Ally and AyaNeo 2S both have gyroscopes, although the Ally suffers from a profound lack of first party software support and so far users are having to use two layers of input mapping software to get practical use out of them.
Exactly. The Ally is available in my country (and with discounts I can get it cheaper than the equivalent Steam Deck even), but no track pads is a huge huge minus. I play a lot of games that use a mouse, why'd I want something that has inferior mouse support?
Moreover, more performance in a portable device is often a trade-off. The board will draw more power, reducing battery life, and it will often generate more heat, requiring more ventilation / fan power which might also further affect battery life (and potentially, its lifespan). You end up paying more for a worse experience, imho.
The new Ayaneo needs a battery that's more than twice the capacity of the Steam Deck in order to be able to even compare to the Steam Deck in autonomy... if Valve launched a revision of the deck with an updated battery it would be a huge improvement, likely doubling its runtime, it's much more efficient than the competition in its power usage.
I'd much prefer games start being designed for low spec devices. What I want is more innovative gameplay and interesting mechanics... if the game wastes immense amounts of power for easthetic reasons, it doesn't make me want to get a portable powerhouse of a console, what it makes me want to do is skip playing that unoptimized game.
well yup and thats what they want the games to be. a service. multiplayer diablo2 was much like an mmo but no servers needed. You could run the server and play with your friends or even open it up but everyone needed to have a copy of the game. so it has been done and they want to do it more and more.
While I’m super into self hosting instances, that usually defeats the point of MMOs. The unfortunate truth of the matter is that the publishers of MMOs often defeat the point of their game after long enough anyhow.
All that has generally pushed me towards round based games where the only advantages are my own personal skill.
is that old.reddit? if it is, you can try using teddit.net instead. gives reddit less data i think. i mean, avoid reddit, but if you do go on, using teddit.net is "harm reduction" (and not judging, i have caved a few times myself!!!!!)
Oh, I'll be coming back. Under old.reddit, with adblockers, to subs that didn't blackout, and my comments aren't going to be exactly... productive. May as well rack up a few bans before deleting the account.
It turned out that the moderators of Reddit, while not enthusiastic about having their tools for tracking down problem users gimped and willing to take subreddits dark, were also not enthusiastic about users spamming "fuck spez" on their subreddits.
Seen a lot of people express this sentiment. This isn't going to be as destructive as you think it is. Genuinely the best thing anyone can do to protest is simple: don't go to reddit.
I’d go so far as saying divert all weapons from Israel too, Hamas is terrible but Genocide is never the answer, plus Israel is really being gross currently, it’s unfortunate. But Ukraine absolutely should be receiving those weapons instead. Not supporting it in any way what so ever but if Israel is going to genocide then they need to figure that shit out on their own (I know it’s the govt not the people) and deal with the consequences of their actions (diplomatic consequences, I’m in no way suggesting more violence).
What, you don't like smoothbrained out-of-touch takes about an entire generation based on the transparent dictate of global property holdings companies?
Old Souls in Young Bodies™ my ass. People are going low-tech to escape pervasive panopticon and the endless stream of fake fucking people and conspiracy peddlers.
Any time I read these broad-brush generation articles, I have to hold my eyes still to avoid setting my skull on fire with frictive heating.
Who in their right mind would pay for a dying social media platform? This reeks of desperation from a man trying to convince himself of his own supposed public image.
He's seemed oddly desperate for money not only about twitter, but also how he's the 1 or 2 wealthiest person in the world yet feels the need to run crypto pump-and-dump scams and game the stock market.
You could ask the same about paying for verification. But a very surprising number of people did that.
I agree with your core point in general, but the reality possibly is "lots of people". The vast, vast majority of people appear to have stuck with TwitX because that's where the people are. People aren't moving to other places because the people aren't there. A jillion organizations, "influencers", wanna-be "influencers", etc are still there because of inertia that surprisingly hasn't run out.
And a whole bunch of idiots have paid for the blue checkmark because they are desperate for attention and think they'll get more views that way. In many cases they're right.
This move, I think, would be more likely to motivate people to move or avoid the platform, but it's ridiculous to me how many people are left after all the other bullshit (including requiring logins, dropping blocking, all the right-wing propaganda and terrible recommendations in general, Musk's behavior, at least a handful of people dropping the platform, etc).
He may be losing money and advertisers but holy shit are a bunch of people still there.
When he first came up with the idea for paid twitter he legit thought he would get millions and millions of sign ups. He thought he was going to rake in so much quick and easy cash. Obviously he was wrong but it’s totally in his character to double down and be convinced that this time it will totally work. I mean, he’s a genius, it has to work.
Not only the value of money (he really thought people would pay $20 a month for Blue?!); he doesn’t understand Twitter. He’s never been on the side of Twitter that used to joke “Twitter is free!” whenever funny stuff happened on the site. There are whole parts of Twitter he’s never seen, and he thinks his very narrow use case of Twitter is THE way Twitter is used.
When the running joke used to be “Twitter is free,” no one is going to want to pay for it.
He fundamentally doesn’t understand what Twitter is/was or does. That’s why this is like watching someone enter a race but keep tripping on their own shoelaces.
Nope. Like, he thinks there’s a huge bot problem on Twitter because he has to deal with bots because he’s famous and talks about crypto. Most Twitter users never deal much with bots so it’s not the big concern. But he does, so he thinks blaming bots for all Twitter’s problems is effective.
I bet he was shocked there was pushback for his API changes when it impacted accounts like the NY subway system, who used it to announce schedule delays. I bet I t never occurred to him people actually used Twitter for something other than shitposting.
Dude thinks he's a genius (he's not). This is the problem when you only look at the outcome of something without factoring what caused it (lots of luck including birth lottery and the effort and talent of people around him in this case).
The requirement to create an account to view replies/threads is a show stopper for me and it has somehow made Twitter even more useless. It barely had value when it was freely legible but it’s not worth sharing data with them to get festering garbage in return.
Yet he thinks people are going to pay for it?
We live in a world where social media and communication are commoditized as fuck and people refuse to pay premiums for shit they can do for free elsewhere. How is Twitter going to compete with Instagram, Threads, Mastodon, Reddit, and Facebook when it’s arguably the worst choice, objectively the least feature rich, yet the only one that costs money?
The people who produce the garbage will pay for it and maybe a few journalists who want to report on the newest pile of garbage, trying to create enough outrage to generate a few clicks on their shitty “news” site.
I think the biggest problem at this point is how much Twitter has replaced a core part of how journalism used to function. Back in the day, if a company/organization/famous person/etc was doing something of note, they would write a press release and send it to news organizations, who would then decide how to cover (or not cover) the story.
Now, shit just gets tweeted out and a good chunk of journalism is just putting a few words around that tweet and calling it news. If Twitter disappeared tomorrow and no clone immediately popped up in its place, modern journalism would collapse.
Weekly reminder that scholars since at least 500 B. C thought the earth was a sphere, so Galileo’s LLM would tell him that, and even tell its size with a reasonable accuracy.
It will never be objective if its dataset is something like the internet. It will always be prone to bias because that's the double-edged sword of LLMs, they have to have vast quantities of data and the only place they can get that is the internet which is biased opinions everywhere.
That's how we make them work today. It is possible to stay politically neutral in a language though. And therefore your generalized statement is incorrect.
That’s because people mean very different things by “political.” I use the definition of “a subject related to the (usually human) division of power”, because it makes it rhetorically harder for people to depoliticize their pet causes, so we can actually look at what’s happening.
Mhm, but with the way LLMs work, it’s not possible to actually remove bias since it’s baked into the training data. Any adjustment towards “neutral” would be biased by what the adjuster considers neutral.
Enougb with the clickbait lmao. Be sure to not fucking say what the stance is so we click your article.
“No, there are no in-game purchases in our game. We believe in providing a complete and immersive gaming experience without the need for additional purchases. Enjoy the game to its fullest without any additional costs or microtransactions.”
In fact, this platform has the ability to add your own little blurb under the link so that we don't have to click through if it's a one-sentence answer.
Calling attention to this type of shit as a reason to suggest Biden shouldn’t be elected is about as bad faith as it can get. OP has been asked- of the third party candidates, who could beat Trump? They predictably had no response. But if this makes Biden unelectable, they’d better hope that their throwaway choice has never made a mistake in their lives- otherwise, admit this is just another attempt to skew the outcome in their favor. And if they have such a hate boner for Biden, what do you think it could be.
Lastly, It’s always good to see this stuff called out for what it is. I have hope that maybe lemmy won’t turn into a right-wing or far-left propaganda platform after all. Democrats aren’t putting up their best option- and haven’t in a long time, but pushing a non-vote or throwaway vote agenda at this time in our lives with everthing at stake is quite possibly the dumbest thing one could possibly do.
ROFL… okay man. This is hopeless. Keep posting your propaganda. We’ll keep calling it out. Come November, if Trump wins- you’re going to vanish from here and resurface as an anonymous victim of your own actions. And we won’t have to deal with you…
If Biden wins, we’ll be too busy celebrating not becoming a dictatorship to listen to anything you’re going to whine about- and we won’t have to deal with you.
Until then, keep posting your hit-pieces. I’m loving watching it get methodically picked apart.
If Trump wins, it could end up partially being your fault. From the third party votes to the pouting at home non votes. Yes. Depending on the margin of loss- you might be entirely responsible for the outcome.
If Biden wins. No- we didn’t need you. Because that’s how it works. Do you not understand that no one can know right now what the outcome is going to be? OF COURSE your votes are needed now- but if he wis without them, then…. Yes- we didn’t need you.
And this whole “blue Maga” insult of yours just makes you look like a foolish and clueless teenager to everyone.
Important note for those who dont want to read the actual article: the ban is essentially saying only some flags can be bought with federal funds and then hung up officially, and the pride flag isn’t one of them. It also doesn’t prohibit personal displays, so while they can’t be on flag poles or bought with federal funds, they can still be displayed. Interestingly, the bill also bans the confederate flag. It’s still just bigotry being forced by the GOP but there’s always more context than a headline can provide.
And the State Department can do whatever it wants. Why would Congress have oversight of a routine maintenance issue for the Executive Branch? They can fly all the pride flags they want and no one can stop them.
The House’s budget power only exists until the item is purchased. It’s actually not very strong. Literally how are they going to enforce this? The Justice Department will be defending the State Department. The House will have… who?
It’s also giving 1.8 billion dollars in weapons to Israel. Fuck every single dem who voted for genocide, and the few republicans who didn’t vote for it because it was insufficiently genocidal.
Then the government should’ve fucking shut down. Not even close to an excuse for voting to fund genocide and I’m utterly baffled as to how you could possibly make such an argument.
I’ve been hearing this excuse for like a decade now.
Shutting down the government to refuse weapon sales to Israel would be a good thing, goddammit. I’d feel that maybe there’s a shred of humanity left in those ghouls if they had.
Us privileged asses in the US will suffer exponentially less harm, especially in the long term, than those of the tens of thousands we’re helping fund the slaughter of.
People are missing the forest for the trees but you are right.
If Republicans force this through on every bill then at some point it would have to pass. You can’t just shut down the US government indefinitely in the real world.
They are not missing the forest for the trees. I forgot this is Lemmy.ml (they chose ML for Marxist Leninists). Supposedly they are communists, but they are actually pro totalitarianism and anti West.
They themselves don’t even give a damn about Palestinians, but will cheer whatever might hurt the US and the West.
