Does anyone know of a modern phone which allows call recording without root?

I'm currently on an aging 5T running and can record calls just fine - a button in the dialler lets me record straight from the line. I don't need to put it on speaker and record via the microphone.

(Looking for 1st hand experience, not search results. No need to reply to discuss the legality of call recording. I need root-less for online banking etc.)

As per all your very fine suggestions, I've gone with the Pixel Pro 8.

Cheapest place is Amazon for £800 - which includes free Pixel Buds - https://amzn.to/3TjjscQ

Plan for next week is to install @GrapheneOS on it.

If you have any tips, tricks, hints, or advice - please let me know 🙂

Woo! is here.

I've decided to give it a week with Google's default OS before flashing anything fancy.

I set it up without a Google account and it didn't complain. Rummaging around in the settings and most of the defaults are sensible and privacy preserving.

So far, the only slightly annoying things are:
Order of the navigation buttons (but can't be changed on Grapheme either).
Hardcoded launcher info screen - filled with news / YouTube. Can't be removed.
No rear swipe sensor.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

Very strange experience just now.

Tried using my NFC ring to sign in to Google on my phone. It wouldn't allow it. Worked fine with my spare Yubikey though.

I tried adding the ring again, and it says it is already set up. No idea what's going on there.

So, always make sure you have registered multiple FIDO2 tokens on every device / service.
(Mind you, that's expensive and tedious.)

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

The camera app is excellent. So customisable.

The temperature sensor is an absolute joke. I thought it might be FLIR - but it is literally just a single point reading which needs to be 5cm away from a surface. Pointless.

Google software gets increasingly needy once you log in. Basically fine until then.

Google Wallet is still magical. Probably the thing I'll miss the most when I install Grapheme.

balterwenjamin42,
@balterwenjamin42@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent On average, how is battery life on Grapheme these days compared to running stock Android?

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@balterwenjamin42 as I said, I haven't installed it yet.

Edent, (edited )
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

Hahaha! The has an NFC sensor right in the middle of the back.

Which means it keeps picking up my ring's NDEF message 😂

Wonder if I can switch off NFC but still keep it for payment?
(Nope! NFC off means no payments.)

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

The came with the in-ear .

They're quite nifty. I haven't tried out the noise cancellation and transparency mode - but audio quality is great. Spatial audio is a nice gimmick.

Tap and swipe controls are accurate and work on both sides.

But, OMG, Big G is desperate for you to use their assistant. I quite like Amazon Echo for home control, but I can't think of a single occasion where I've wanted to speak to my phone.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

OK, turns out I did have noise cancellation out - it was drowning out the sound of my laptop fan.
Very effective!
Wonder what it is like in a noisy office?

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

I decided to play around with .
Voice recognition is excellent.
TTS is terrible - sounds tinny and awful. I played with a few different voices, all crap.

"Hey Google, open YouTube" works,

"Hey Google, open Gmail" gives "Opening emails is not supported on this device." WTF?

"Hey Google, translate into French" works.

But now, if I say "Hey Google, translate into German," it just says "Salut Google, traduis en allemand" and I can't find a way to exit it!

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

Pairing the with was easy.
The taps and swipes pass through and can control playback and volume.

Reports as AAC codec. No idea if I can get it to do anything else, but sound quality seems good to me.

tomayac,
@tomayac@toot.cafe avatar

@Edent Wait until Big G wants you to use Gemini instead.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

The 's camera zoom is ridiculous. I last had optical zoom on a Sharp (!) P902 in 2004.

Here's the view from the cheap seats at the O2 last night.

(Next message shows zoom.)

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

And here it is at maximum zoom.

That's stunningly good!

I'm not clever enough to play with all the pro tools, ISO, exposure, etc. I just had this in point and shoot mode.

I didn't use any of the cloud AI processing either.

tomayac,
@tomayac@toot.cafe avatar

@Edent There is a fair bit of on-device AI processing, though. It takes a noticeable moment from the first preview to the final stored image. The camera lenses and the camera app (625 MB) are amazing.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

The webcam feature on the is stunningly good. Wish it were backported to earlier kernels.

I've paid for DroidCam - https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2021/03/droidcam-use-an-old-android-as-your-webcam/ - which is a great way of getting similar functionality on older devices.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

here we go!

Couldn't get the WebUSB to work - so going with the CLI tools. Very well written documentation.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

Fuck yeah!

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

My on going well so far.
Software updated.
Bluetooth paired, headphone controls work.
eSIM installed - but didn't connect. Removed and reinstalled seems to have worked. But had to manually select network.
Regular SIM connected to 5G.
Better try installing my regular apps.

Boring work mode stuff can wait until my holiday is over!

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

Good news on the front - the new firmware has DisplayPort over USB-C.

I plugged into a hub, my phone detected Ethernet, mouse, keyboard, and the monitor!

Only problem is, I've no idea how to rotate the external screen on Android. Any clues?

kraftner,
@kraftner@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent May sound stupid, but have you tried rotating the phone?

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@kraftner does that work when you try it?

kraftner,
@kraftner@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent I don't have a screen here to test with my phone, but I've seen that behaviour when sharing a screen via WiFi. But yeah, probably a stupid proposal anyway since you've obviously tried that...I just remember me not realising that for longer than I am proud of with WiFi and rotation lock on... 😂

SamJSharpe,
@SamJSharpe@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Edent it works a bit differently to turning your phone.

You need to place one hand either side of the external screen, gently raise it slightly from the desk, rotate it a quarter turn, place it gently down on the desk again and let go with both hands.

Bugger. Looks like Starling bank has stopped working with

https://github.com/PrivSec-dev/banking-apps-compat-report/issues/39

So I either need to get a new phone which has an unmodified OS, hope that Starling fix it, or move bank.

All within the next 14 days.

NB it is completely legitimate that software makers can decide where their code runs - see https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2023/05/the-limits-of-general-purpose-computation/ - but it annoys me.

(Please don't be a confidently wrong man clogging up my replies.)

redauburn,
@redauburn@ohai.social avatar

@Edent the Nationwide app recently stopped working too :(

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@redauburn
Argh! Don't say that! Mine seems to be OK so far.

accudio,
@accudio@mastodon.scot avatar

@Edent Ah bollocks, I'm also with Starling on GrapheneOS. Thank you for bringing to my attention in advance!

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@accudio
as per that github thread, uninstall you're current version, install the older version.
You have to do through verification again, bit of works.
For now!

jawnsy,
@jawnsy@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent It surprised me to learn that so many people are willing to change banks rather than phones, guess y'all are true believers :)

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@jawnsy
No, we just live in a country which makes it easy to automatically switch banks.
A strong government regulator has meant that retail banking is free, switching is painless, and banks will provide monetary incentives to attract customers.

DM_Ronin,
@DM_Ronin@mstdn.social avatar

@Edent at least there is an alternative to switch to another bank

But if you're an immigrant, have just one smartphone, and has to switch to eVisa because Home Office decides to go fully paperless since 2025? "Nah nah, get lost, you're doomed"

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@DM_Ronin I don't work for the Home Office. So I can't help you. Sorry.

baarkerlounger,
@baarkerlounger@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent interestingly they provide an open banking API (https://developer.starlingbank.com/) so it might be possible to build your own app without their restrictions. It's missing a few bits of functionality like adding new payees but might do for most things.

privateger,

@Edent I'd heavily suggest the Lawnchair launcher. Fixes all that weird non-customizable branding.

anarchotaoist,
@anarchotaoist@liberdon.com avatar

My understanding was it depended upon the jurisdiction of where you are at. LineageOS killed the feature for legal reasons. I have an old 1+5T and it no longer works. Nor does it work on an 8T. This is Australia. @Edent

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@anarchotaoist I have a modern LineageOS device and call recording works fine on it in the UK.

nobodyinperson,
@nobodyinperson@fosstodon.org avatar

@Edent (which is Linux + Android compatiblity layer) can record calls out of the box. No experience with online banking apps, but I heard some are working, some aren't.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@nobodyinperson that's a thoroughly unhelpful reply then, isn't it?

Me: Can someone recommend a sausage? I'm allergic to garlic.

You: Why isn't that helpful?

parmaene,
@parmaene@chaos.social avatar

@Edent Pixel7a with GrapheneOS let's me record Calls in the way you described it.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@parmaene can you run banking apps if it doesn't pass SafetyNed?

nogweii,
@nogweii@nogweii.net avatar

@Edent @parmaene some work, but fewer and fewer. I run GrapheneOS on a Pixel 6 Pro, and my bank app stopped working a few months ago. 😑

(It stopped once before like ~1.5 yes ago but started working again a week later so I was hopeful... But appears as if no luck.)

🇺🇸 if that matters.
