I’ve been getting comments from my friends who have (I don’t have one and will probably wait a while before I get one) and I’m starting to think that neither “VR” nor ”AR” describes the experience of using the device.

I think the correct descriptor is “Mediated Reality”. What you see in passthrough isn’t the real world—it’s what the device thinks the real world should look like. The FaceTime personas are what the device thinks you should look like—including your weird synthesized hands.

@drahardja Okay, this might actually be pretty interesting for dysphoria – if you can hack it to show you, like, wolf paws or something instead of just a fake version of human hands.

Of course, it's Apple, so haha no.

@frost You know, this is actually an interesting use case. Apps can get real-time information of the user’s hands and fingers. I wonder if there is some therapeutic uses for this, e.g. for amputees with Phantom Pain syndrome.

@drahardja has been calling it for 8-10years.

is a cheat code for

It allows the simulated environment and physical reality to be synchronized and time offset.

Most MR is offset by 20-100ms, but the 12ms for Apple is impressive, but for it to disappear, we probably need 2-6ms.

Most gaming monitors are between 1-6ms now.

I think AVP is the engineering/ physics limitation of this style of tech.

@jdavidnet I think “Mixed Reality” still suggests to the buyer that there is a mix of actual reality and synthesized reality, with the synthesized version having the option of blocking out actual reality (as opposed to AR where the synthesized images are basically superimposed ghost-like on top of reality). What I want to convey is that none of what you see is actually real—it’s all been processed and interpreted in a way that is supposed to be perceived as physical reality, but is not.

Haha, and a web search shows that someone has described Mediated Reality as a superset of Mixed Reality (AR+VR) and Modulated Reality (purposefully adding/subtracting from reality), so maybe I need a different term. It’s something where things you see are synthesized, but are intended to be perceived as real. It’s not exactly filtered, altered, or modified, just…passed through an interpreter that tries to faithfully reconstruct reality as best as it can, and of course falling short of full fidelity.

Interpreted Reality perhaps? I dunno.
