My Second Life neighbor deleted everything they built and is now selling the land for the equivalent of $200. I don't think I'm willing to pay that (nor do I want to pay an extra $22/month for having that much land) but maybe they'd be willing to sell a small portion of it to me so I could expand my house a bit.

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@NovaSquirrel Y'know it's interesting that SL itself took something that could totally be free (virtual land space) and made capitalism out of it.

And the land is worth something purely because everyone agrees it's worth something. Fiat land space.

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@NovaSquirrel Huh!! Didn't know things ran all the time. That makes sense.

I read a book called "how to manage your money like a f*cking grown up" and got a panic attack after the first 10 pages. Never read it again.

@mic :blobcatheart:

how to manage your money: have enough money.

You can't budget your way out of poverty. And getting nice things is important and Good, Actually.

It'd be cool to see more people (or communities) try and make their own little hangouts online. Websockets make it really simple to have a basic chat app because they simplify everything down to the point where you can send and receive strings, and the client can just be a webpage.

Though I admit most people probably want features like a history, uploading images, or good handling for unreliable internet connections, and those aren't exactly trivial. I specifically wanted something where presence is meaningful and where everyone isn't just expected to be reachable all the time, myself.

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@NovaSquirrel History and stuff aren't /that/ complicated! We have our own custom websockets chat for our streaming site.

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@NovaSquirrel Yeah, our streaming site logs history in a file forever, but never reads that file, and tosses in-memory history when it restarts!

It used to send you the entire in-memory history on connect, but we recently changed it to only send you the past 4 hours. (4 hours is long enough to probably be longer than any given stream, but short enough that you don't have to worry about people coming by the next day and reading the kinda private conversation you had in the stream chat.)

I'm using Animal Crossing: New Leaf's "talk to random strangers online" feature and everyone is so open about talking about Pretendo and custom firmware and everything.

I guess there's no reason not to be; what's Nintendo going to do, ban me from the service they're shutting down tomorrow?

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@NovaSquirrel Man, we should figure out how to install Pretendo huh.

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@NovaSquirrel @roxy ... can you use Pretendo's friends service? :3

frost, to demoscene
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

Is smaller democoding easier?

I wonder if it's like pixel art.

(yeah yeah I know "you don't have to do sizecoding" except all anyone EVER talks about is sizecoding, for the most part; and also pixel-arting an executable sounds kinda neat)

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@HeNeArXn hey could you please not tag random official-PR-accounts on people's posts without asking first?

and whoever's running the @lovebyteparty account, if you wanna follow me, maybe try doing it as /yourself/ instead of some PR account? Because this is a bit creepy.

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@HeNeArXn @lovebyteparty like, tagging in a friend makes sense, and is fine

if my OP was actually /about/ the lovebyte demoparty, then it would also have been fine probably

but this is like,
it's like nonconsensually adding hashtags to people's posts, with a side of "official Brand® Account acting like it's a real person" creepiness.

Something I haven't been able to figure out a good solution for yet: Tilemap Town gets used for both roleplaying and regular chat, and both happen on the same maps but they don't mix very well, so it would probably be a good idea to signal that something is going on so you know what you're walking in on.

You can mark yourself as being in-character, but you currently have to check the user list to see it. Pony Town makes it more prominent with an icon shown above characters, which might be a good idea? It could be something where if you're in-character, it highlights people who aren't, but if you aren't then it highlights people who are? And it could mark chat messages too.

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@NovaSquirrel What happens if people go "yeah I'm in-character!" and EVERYONE is In Character and I'm just myself and have no one to talk to?

Like there's a difference between "in character" and "is doing a scene" – and I can do scenes /without/ being a character. It's completely orthogonal.

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@NovaSquirrel "in scene"/"in RP" might work and is pretty concise!

frost, to music
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

hey periodic reminder that CDs are AWESOME

They're small, they don't degrade over time or use, they're digital so you can bit for bit copy them if need be (preservation!), they're flippin' LOSSLESS, and they've got all the quality you could ever need

(anything over CD-quality 44KHz is pointless and apparently anything over 16bit is also pretty pointless unless you're mixing)

I got a bundle of GBA SP accessories because I wanted another headphone adapter, but it came with an FM radio cartridge that seemed interesting until I got it and it turned out that it just uses the GBA for power, so it just displays the boot screen forever.

But it is kind of cool in the context of playing tunes while playing something on a DS, where it does still get power and still work. Not that I would realistically do that, though?

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@NovaSquirrel tired: USB power
wired: entire fucking GBA cartridge

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@NovaSquirrel It's the GBA equivalent of those power-only USB cables! :3

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@NovaSquirrel I want a GBA-to-(some random device that takes DC power) cable now, like we have USB to 3DS and now USB to Wii-U-gamepad cables.

Bet it doesn't put out 5V1+A though.

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@NovaSquirrel Huh, that switch thing is /neat!/

Since I'm playing Animal Crossing: Wild World regularly at the moment, it could be fun to try and make a homebrew program that does a little bit of save editing for some things that aren't necessarily cheats, but that just make the game nicer to play? That kind of area feels under-explored.

It'd be nice to have some expanded item storage (with a "sort" button), and a tool for making it easier to decorate the ground with patterns (and help with patterns in general). Maybe the ability to move rocks and trees around? And it could help with keeping backups.

I just would like to point out that
none of the accounts I was forced to create for job applications so far had any options for multi-factor authentication or for deleting the account.

And all of the accounts I was forced
to create for job applications so far required to enter very sensitive information that was completely unnecessary to require.

Don’t. Do. This.
Please. Stop.

I’ve been getting comments from my friends who have (I don’t have one and will probably wait a while before I get one) and I’m starting to think that neither “VR” nor ”AR” describes the experience of using the device.

I think the correct descriptor is “Mediated Reality”. What you see in passthrough isn’t the real world—it’s what the device thinks the real world should look like. The FaceTime personas are what the device thinks you should look like—including your weird synthesized hands.

frost,
@frost@chitter.xyz avatar

@drahardja Okay, this might actually be pretty interesting for dysphoria – if you can hack it to show you, like, wolf paws or something instead of just a fake version of human hands.

Of course, it's Apple, so haha no.

@drq I mean, if you're randomly tagging people...

like, I have no context, but if you ARE doing that, "but this is important!!!" does not justify it, that's what boosts and hashtags are for.

@drq That's what the local timeline is for!

Please don't do the fedi equivalent of activism spam texts, it's not cool.
