I'm curious how many times people fall off the deck there in the middle of the night when they have to pee, resulting in a head injury or broken leg. Also... do they not have mosquitos there? https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20240420-12-stunning-buildings-that-bring-nature-inside

@ai6yr To be sure they have mosquitos, there’s a stagnant water pool attached to the house.

I'm pretty sure that's a violation of most building safety codes in the US (ie deck with no railing)

LOL designed by the "Formafatal" architects. Yes, that would be a possible fatal fall.

It's changed (2015 looks to be more current) but appears you need guards on decks more than 30 inches above grade in the International Residential Code (IRC). Thus, the "one floor above and drop into the jungle" is absolutely a safety hazard, and not code compliance. ("Guard required if more than 30 inches")

Costa Rica... squarely in the "mosquitos carrying dengue" per the CDC. "Travelers to areas of risk should protect themselves by preventing mosquito bites." https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/level1/dengue-americas

I did see this "luxury villa" in this BBC article "12 stunning buildings that bring nature inside"

That building in particular makes me think maybe not to take their design advice.

LOL that house is located in Puntarenas, which according to this article in PubMed:

"Puntarenas is one of the cities of Costa Rica where dengue was first reported in 1993 (Guzmán et al. 1998)....This city presents some of the common problems of many larger cities in Latin America: poor urban planning, high unemployment rates, poverty, poor solid waste management, among others (INEC 2002). Its urban and environmental conditions make this city an appropriate environment for the presence of A. aegypti and consequently dengue."

lightning,

@ai6yr If I lived in such a building, I’d move the bed inside, and install netting as well as guards. The guards would only drop for a hang glider or BASE launch.

@lightning @ai6yr

There's a real bed inside. I think the one on the deck is for lounging near-ish the pool, watching the sunset, and uh, snuggling?

@me_valentijn @lightning "Snuggling" while being viciously attacked by mosquitos as the neighborhood gawks at the rich tourists "snuggling" in plain view of everyone 🤪

@ai6yr I believe the Residential Building Code is superseded here by the Law of the Jungle.
