From @pluralistic and HT to @erlend for this:

"Is there something better coming?” I think it’s ; and I think it’s Mastodon for a bunch of reasons. One is that the Mastodon standard was developed when the tech platforms were totally disinterested and didn’t have their fingers on the scale...."

@tchambers Is there such a thing as a "Mastodon standard", or is that just a figure of speech?

It seems a little backward to state that ActivityPub governs Mastodon, I thought it was the reverse, that Mastodon adopted the ActivityPub protocol. Also thought the right to exit was a Mastodon-only thing. Export tooling, etc. isn't discussed in the protocol spec, unless I missed it.

tchambers,

@devnull I think that was shorthand for , the standard that Mastodon (and others) uses.

@tchambers @devnull Fair, but the shorthand makes it sound like provides @pluralistic’s “right to exit” when it doesn’t—that’s , and it only provides the “right to exit” to another Mastodon instance in the . If you want to go to or from another type of service, you’re SOL.

@mjgardner @tchambers @pluralistic well, as per the minimum is to be able to export the data in a common format. We use csv at , and while you can't easily reimport that format back to another piece of software it is still possible at least.

@devnull @tchambers Again, fair point, but @pluralistic characterizes a “right to exit” as more than that.

oliphant,

@devnull @mjgardner @tchambers @pluralistic You can migrate directly from Mastodon to Calckey. I've tested it.

So that's at least 2 services.
