Facebook Clickbait Headline: Ancient shipwreck with Orichalcum may prove Atlantis existed!

Me: Um, that’s a copper/zinc alloy. We call that brass. It’s a neet find, very early for brass, but it’s not Atlantis.

@deinol "Orichalcum" was a name made up by Plato for "weird Atlantean metal", which generations later got used to mean "brass" or "chalcopyrite". I suspect a marketing guy.

@RogerBW it’s amazing how many people think “allegory Plato invented” means “historical fact”.

If anything it’s based on a vague sense of a previous “golden age” from before the Bronze Age collapse.

@deinol Yeah, and I mean it's so obviously an allegory, these guys were super smart and powerful but they Reached Too Far.
