A Cold War pronunciation map of southern English towns for airmen, I believe. Some real crackers in here. "Tanbrydż-Łelz" is a personal favourite. As is "Dżylynem".

    @Immer Somebody actually researched the origins of this map. Apparently it's a Cold War Soviet map, which includes western France, some of Belgium, and SE England.
    It's marvellous. Just discovered Apmynste. 🤣

    Sine,

    @Neverfadingwood This is brilliant!! We used to live in Poulgeit 😂

    @Sine It's fantastic, isn't it? How others see us, or something.

    @Neverfadingwood Nice find! I have a friend in "Szuberynes" that I forwarded this to. :D

    @Neverfadingwood

    This is great, what's the source? Does it cover more than SE England?

    Neverfadingwood,
    @Neverfadingwood@lingo.lol avatar

    @PMKeeling I wish I knew precisely. It's a thing that's been floating around the Polish internet for years. From what I've been able to ascertain, it was made for Polish pilots in WWII to give their position. I've only ever seen SE England.

    Found it. Turns out it's a cold war map, looks like you can buy it here: https://redatlasbook.com/topos_polish

    Here's the specific map, a lovely hi-res scan. No more of the UK, but Northern France and Belgium: https://images.jomidav.com/M-31_Polish.html

    @Neverfadingwood OTOH, Saufend is exactly how the locals think it should be spelt, anyway.

    @anarchic_teapot Very true!

    @Neverfadingwood The lack of a TH sound in Polish means that "Saufend" comes out exactly the way Londoners would say it.

    @petersketch Yes, exactly. Love your avi, by the way. Krtek is a big favourite of mine.

    @TazPoltorak It's wonderful, isn't it? Whoever originally drew it up must have had a whale of a time.

    @Neverfadingwood @TazPoltorak They were spying in Britain and preparing for the invasion if WW3 were going to happen.

    Might have had a good time in Britain while doing this.

    vitaminsludge,

    @Neverfadingwood their efforts were discarded at Brexit time
