@nixCraft The only reason I chose Chrome in the first place when Opera died (god I miss the real thing -- I'm not referring to the Chromium clone that calls itself Opera obviously) was that it was lighter and better performing than Firefox at the time. It remains better performing in really constrained environments (such as my Raspberry Pi 4) but in the end is not worth it now that Google has completely lost what little sense they ever had. It's troublesome on my RPi, but I am never going back
Used to be a Firefox user for years, but after the Proton redesign there were a lot of community complaints about the bloating in terms of usage of space in menus particularly.
The UX team's response to the whole situation basically boiled down to "tough, suck it up or use another browser".
So I did.
I'm on Vivaldi these days, which I love because of the features and customisability it offers, and the Vivaldi Devs seem like they actually care about their users' experience.
@nixCraft actually after some of your posts I decided to switch to ff. I use Floorp for a couple of months and there's no reason to switch back to chrome
@nixCraft Unreliable commitment to performance has been a problem for me historically. They update and they're the fastest thing around for like 2 weeks, then a Chromium change wipes out their lead for 3 years running.
They pretty much constantly feel experimental - like using unstable packages on Gentoo Linux as a daily driver.
@nixCraft Firefox is like a lot of *nix- it's a promise of fleet and sleek but really suffers from the mange. After coming from a world where a "Window System" was a row of ADM-3a terminals and a chair on wheels, when all is said and done of 40+ years of various kinds "browser" type of presentation, they all seem like milk past its pull date by now.
