Think I might have just seen an iridium flare. That thing was bright...like brighter than venus or the ISS.

pretty cool

    @arose62 Apparently they're still going strong, a lot have been de-orbited but there are even some new ones. It seems they have a place in the IoT market

    Hmmm. maybe not. took a look at some videos of them, it seems they usually last 5-20 seconds and fade in and out. This was just one bright flash...like a few milliseconds, on and off. And only in one place, didn't move.

    Meteor?

    @mightyspaceman I'd guess unlikely to be a meteor.

    I've seen a similar thing - a single very bright flash, very quick, then nothing. My guess is a satellite or piece of debris with one flat surface that is rotating fairly quickly, but with a very narrow view angle for the reflection. No idea what it could be, though.

    @Bern Yes. Found a video that looks exactly like what I saw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-1_7GMYR58

    most likely space debris, yeah. was like that video but just a one-off, like the brightest one shown there. I've seen things like this before, once it was a continuous flash about every 15 seconds moving slowly - pretty sure it was a straight line. the second was quite a while ago so my memory may not serve me that well but I think it was moving around like that video, in a new location each time...but not really enough that it couldn't be something like a weather balloon. idk don't really remember that one much.

    @Bern I'm going to try organize to get two observation points to see if I can triangulate the altitude. See if it matches with any tracked sattelites or debris.

    Would anybody be interested?

    @mightyspaceman It'd be pretty hard to get good observations. Cameras would be useful, I guess. I don't spend much time outside looking at the sky, so it was pretty lucky I just happened to be looking at the right place at the right time to see it...

    @mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

    @Bern mmmmm. would need a 360 cam or something.

    for me though, I tend to see the flashes quite often. Only takes a few minutes of looking up on a clear night
