I started a small survey in the LinkedIn group "The R Project for Statistical Computing" about . The results so far:

  • Turns out that 83 % don't know it and
  • circa 8 % use it.

There were 139 people who participated in the survey. Given that RKWard is among the oldest IDEs and GUIs [1], it is somewhat surprising. I suppose we should improve the advertising of our tool.

adamhsparks,

@devSJR I admit, I’ve not used it in several years. In the mid-00s I used it heavily and then moved to RStudio as I moved away from Linux to Mac around the time RStudio debuted. I know there’s a Mac port. One thing that I found as I became more advanced using R was I needed the IDE more than the GUI. Time to take another look and see what you’ve been up to.

@adamhsparks @devSJR The only R environments I've ever used are Jupyter R notebooks and Rstudio (apart from running some quick stuff from command line in a container with the R command.)

I was able to connect vscode to JupyterHub, though, but I've never actually really used vscode like this beyond proving that I could connect it to JupyterHub and do some basic things with it.

@adamhsparks @devSJR I guess the ironic thing there is Rstudio via JupyterHub has helped us move stuff more to Linux that used to run on Windows (lab machines and RDP based shared environs).

    @schluff
    That is indeed the case. is an excellent product that makes things easier, especially if you start with R stats. However, at conferences and other occasions (e.g., my lectures), I observe that people think R == RStudio.
    In my LinkedIn post, I also mentioned the R GUI/IDE comparisons that Rob Muenchen does (https://www.r-bloggers.com/2022/01/a-comparative-review-of-the-r-instat-gui-for-r/). There are so many GUIs out there. For example, have you ever heard about (https://doi.org/10.18637/jss.v049.i04)? All these tools are not really promoted.

    @schluff I tested it a while ago. for was working. Just checked. Works for me in . Haven't tried in . The version is the most likely issue indeed.

    @devSJR I suppose there have been improvements since 2012. What are the features of this IDE? How does it compare to geany, VisualCode or Rstudio?

    @devSJR you might want to join the -promo:kde.org room and ask for help. We recently promoted rkward on https://kde.org/for/scientists but we could promote it more and in more places.

    Hey @carlschwan. I have seen that promo. Thanks to the team. Indeed, we at @rkward should get more in touch with the -promo:kde.org, This would be a matrix room?

    @devSJR @rkward yes it's a matrix room.
