We released Quicktest v0.2.2! Quicktest is my little fun side-project to make automated testing of Linux distro installs easier and faster.

Here's a quick video of the new test which operates Calamares to test install Kubuntu 24.10 (daily live image) in a VM.

I can't get over how fast this is!

Another rant because nothing ever works and the community keeps disappointing me.

Why in the world does everyone say works so good it's "the most reliable KDE distro ever, been using it for 48723698 years!" when in the FIRST day everything keeps breaking? I've been losing the whole day trying to fix KDE Neon, NOTHING works! I just want to play my games... :(

Genuinely thinking to go back to Windows after 7ish years of daily driving Linux... I've been getting disappointed more and more. I hoped for Linux to improve with reliability, but it never did. It just keeps breaking.

All this "high customisability" comes at a cost, clearly.

I swear, is the only OS where i have to set my cursor settings three times, at least. ( Qt, GTK, Flatpak )

I don't want to go back on because snapd keeps coming back like a virus. But at this point seems like i don't have choice... Maybe will work idk... Prolly not...

I’m using #Kubuntu on one of my laptops and I’m just a bit bummed that we won’t be getting #Plasma6 in this month’s semiannual OS release and would have to wait for the October Kubuntu 24.10 version. Then again, I remember the huge uproar that accompanied the release of Plasma 5 a decade ago, so I think I’m okay with waiting a few months for Plasma 6 (and especially the Wayland support) to be extra stable before upgrading.

Still really enjoying . But the one thing I haven’t had much joy with is the screenshot tool. It seems to capture the wrong area of the screen when I have multiple monitors. Plus it requires multiple clicks. Are there any recommendations for tools other than the one bundled in to ?

EDIT: I have given up.

Guys, I'm feeling frustrated and stumped.

Sitting at my sister's home, I can use the WLAN easily. Lappy connects to it automatically.

But I have LAN (yes, a physical cable) in my guest room that would give me better speed. I plug it into the laptop - and it will not connect. I even gave LAN priority in the settings.

I cannot find a setting to tell it to use the darn ethernet cable. Where do I look?

Running Kubuntu / Plasma on an Acer Travelmate.

okay linux fans. I'm trying to get Divinity Original Sin 2 running on Kubuntu 22.04 under steam and proton, and it's just not doing it. I've tried most or all of the online suggestions w/r/t copying certain files and setting different flags and proton versions, but nothing past a black screen. anything I'm missing?

I moved my backup desktop machine from to Fedora . I've been using it on my laptop for a couple of months now without significant issue, but still manage to confuse myself once in a while about which toolbox container I am in.

The power of Free Software: Turning trash into treasure!

I deeply regret buying a laptop for Linux with a hidpi screen. With two external 1080p screens, the scaling is all over the place and barely usable. Dangerously close to getting rid of the laptop and replacing it with a 1080p display one.

Ooooh... why did I say I'd use KDE for 2 weeks? Can I shorten that to one?

This is just adjustment pain talking, I know, but wow. I might love how looks, but actually working with it is not fun for me. Nothing works the way I expect it to.

But CO, don't you just mean "meh! nOt GnoMe! mE No LiKeY!"

I mean... yeah. That's what I mean. From the very first time I tried 3 (like, ten or twelve years ago), everything about it has felt natural to me. The changes that have been made over the years leading up to Gnome 45 today have all more or less worked for me. The way it works just meshes with my brain somehow, and it's very comfortable to work in.

Plasma is none of that, and I don't know why I'm putting myself through this. Don't get me wrong: I adore the KDE project. It's a gorgeous, feature-packed, ultimately configurable . The problem for me personally is that I just don't need about 75% of those features, and the default setups don't function the way my brain does.

So in short, I might be cutting this experiment short, not because KDE is bad, but because Gnome feels like home.

Which is weird, because I hated Gnome 2, which I thought of as a more difficult to work with, less resource efficient version of .

Oh, yeah, and ? It's fine. It's super-fine-tuned and dedicated to its mission of being a cutting edge KDE desktop. Which is great if that's what you want, but there's a fine line between dedication and obsession.

I prefer it to dealing with Arch, though, if I'm being honest - specifically because of that obsession. Everything official is tight, works together, and accomplishes the stated goal of the OS. Even the KCP repo is on board for the most part, and it all comes together. If someone did something like this for Gnome/GTK, it'd probably be my OS of choice.

@devSJR@fosstodon.org avatar

@s20 I haven't dealt with KDE 6 yet. I'm just looking at the news and that sounds very intriguing to me.
Regarding distros, I have always been very true to something that has to do with Debian. I used , , , , and now more , and .
