There are some serious issues with #Debian repos. As well as with everyother Debian based distro repos.
For the last 4 months :
A Mint (Cinnamon) APT upgrade broke my system. Well, sh.... happens. Unsatisfying troubleshooting led me to install Debian 12.
Debian 12 (Cinnamon) works fine. As a complete noob it's a little bit harder to set. But it works. Until it doesn't, when APT depots are someday broken or unsafe. Wtf those were the ones installed by default !
Matrix certrainly has its rough edges, but I find it awesome that pretty much every major Linux community now has their dedicated space. All federated, of course.
On #Debian 11, the whole system along with #XFce was taking 500 MB of RAM. On Debian 12, the system takes 850 MB of RAM. On Trixie/Sid-unstable, it takes 1.3 GB. I honestly don't know what they're shoving in it.
With #Cinnamon and #Gnome, it takes 1.6 GB on idle. Since when Cinnamon, a gnome2/gtk3 fork takes (or should take) as much RAM as Gnome4/gtk4? Something's amiss.
Anyone has an idea why for a few weeks, the #ComposeKey under #X11 on #Debian Unstable (set via "setxkbmap -option compose:menu -option compose:rwin -option compose:rctrl -option compose:ralt") suddenly only works if I release it before pressing the first key of the wanted key combo?
If you see e.g. a "a instead of an ä from me, it's because I was used to already press " before I released the Compose Key. Very annoying and happens far too often. 🤬
So I found myself in a weird predicament. I had some older laptops that I converted to #Debian & #XFce with a bunch of added apps and games. I gave some to my family, and the rest I wanted to give them to kids for school. I asked around. Well, no one seems to want them. No one is using computers anymore in #Greece it seems, they only use #smartphones. They barely browse the web too (just some gov sites). They just use #tiktok and few apps, consoles for games. That's it.
It is absolutely mind bending how many options ffmpeg has. I've been trying to convince it to use the old Radeon 2600 Pro graphics hardware acceleration. No luck finding the magic command yet! :)
I've setup a few installs of Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) for family, friends, and myself. I really like it! Mint's Cinnamon desktop comes with sensible defaults, is easy to customize, and intuitive to use for new and old Linux users alike.
MintyFresh is my setup script for the latest release of LMDE 6 aka "Faye". It is ideally run after the first boot into a fresh LMDE install:
Well, let's just say it's a small price to pay for the unclogging of the previous 200+ held back packages. Good thing we have https://snapshot.debian.org/ to "roll back" a little!
I hooked my GNU/Linux-loving son up with an old #lenovo#thinkcenter mini-PC that I picked up at a used AV store for about $50. For another $20, I upgraded the ram to 12GB.
He's got it setup it up with #debian as his first home server, with which he's now hosting a few static websites and an internet radio station for his friends and family. He's got loads of resources to spare for when he gets into running larger services.
You don't need to spend $30+ a month on cloud services when an old recycled office PC will more than suffice.
The best part? Helping him troubleshoot his problems with #DNS and #nginx and all that fun stuff. I've already made every mistake possible over the decades, and he gets to benefit from that. That how it should work!
This is a #watercolor painting I did a few months ago but hadn't share, until we bought a scanner here in #Greece. It arrived today, I scanned the painting under #Debian#Linux without any issues (or additional drivers), and I fixed the colors with #Gimp. It's the first time I use The Gimp for my paintings (I've used The Gimp on and off since its inception, but not for my artworks). I've been using #Photoshop instead for my collages and paintings, but I stopped my #Adobe subscription a few months ago. It's all #Foss now.
