Night Sonder

As I walked alone down the
middle of Simpson Avenue
in the fall evening dark
of Somerville Massachusetts,

returning to the house
I was living in that late
1970's undergraduate year,

looking at the lights
from the curtained windows
of the duplexes crowded
against the sidewalks,

I was overswept, inflated,
a sudden chill breath of
air caught in my chest,

as a vast awareness swelled
of the impossibly vivid
lives and endless intensities
behind each curtain.
