I've been talking about taking Callisto to the French Quarter to do some training now it's cooled down and since Mardi Gras is in like what... 5 months? So my work interpreter-- and one of my bffs-- surprised me today with braille maps of the French Quarter and the Central Business District so I can take them on our adventure. Yes I know we have GPS but sometimes it helps me to have physical copies of things like this especially when it's spacial information.

The picture shows a paper with a diagram on it. On the right side of the paper, there is a representation of the Mississippi River in blue color with small white dots, and the words "Mississippi River" written in it. On the left side, there is a grid with several rows and columns. Next to the rows, there are abbreviations these represent street names and I have a key that shows me the name associated with each abbreviation. This is because braille is larger than print. There are abbreviations such as "GVR", "URS", "STPH", "DMN", "STA", "ORL", "STPT", "TLS", "STL", "CNT", "BNV", "IBR", "CNL", "SRM". At the bottom of the grid, there are also abbreviations such as "BRN", "STCH", "TCHP", "CNV", "OKF", "CRN", "CMP", "MGZ", "SPT". The background of the paper is white and the grid lines are black. The paper is placed on a wooden surface.

@Pawpower These maps are so cool! Sometimes it’s just easier to have something physical to refer to to help a new place make sense. When we were looking at flats to move to a few years back my husband experimented making floor plans tactile for me with all kinds of things and in the end we found Lego worked really well for that!

@sarahmatthews Oh cool what a brilliant idea to use Lego! I like these maps because you can follow the raised line of the road with your finger and actually trace out the route.

@Pawpower @sarahmatthews I love that idea. I had a colleague who used to do a lot of arty stuf. He made me a bunch of maps with sterdy cardboard and different fabrics with differentiated textures. Legos are much easier.
