Lol YT has ads? I use LibreTube, PipePipe, or Clipious on Android and either an Invidious or Piped proxy front-end website on desktop. Or just yt-dlp to download via CLI.
@Green_Footballs if you use linux or android, try FreeTube as your primary interface. NewPipe is the other Android app.
there is a firefox extension (for desktop) that opens all youtube links on either invidious on the browser or directly to Freetube. you can set on Android NewPipe as your default YT link opener or just use the FF "open link in app" doohickeymajigg.
@Green_Footballs@GreatDismal the shitty game ads that come on mid video and cut straight to sounds of literal machine gun fire noises at full volume are my personal submission for evidence this is true. There’s no way that’s a highly targeted ad, so I guess these garbage phone games have huge ad spend?
@Green_Footballs it's the music videos in ads that get me. Not only are they 4 minutes long, but they are NEVER music that we are interested in, and are also generally really bad.

I have disabled history on yt and now my homepage is … blank! It could have been my subscriber page now that I don’t have any recommendations, but they didn’t do that.
I can picture the YT manager when he decided this.
@Green_Footballs I haven't tested it recently, but a couple of years ago it took me only 4 clicks to go from a cat video to insane conspiracy theories. Maybe ads are preferable?
@Green_Footballs@GreatDismal They’re on a mission to find the pain point where the maximum number of people give them $14/mo to make it stop. Unfortunately, they’re probably just creating an endless war with ever more baroque combinations of ad blockers and alternatives to viewing on the YT site.
@Green_Footballs I always find it funny that 95% of the ads I get on Spotify are for Spotify premium. They're literally just saying "please pay me money to make me stop annoying you"
