@ajroach42 Probably still Pleroma, and Akkoma if not, that lineage seems to nicely maximize features with speed and reliability. (Running Firefish currently on another server, slop.social, and it's nice enough but it's so damn heavy and it feels like having that many dependencies, especially Node.js packages, is just begging for problems.)
@ajroach42 I suppose it would depend on what purpose it would serve.
For microblogging I would still go with #Hometown for being a mild Masto variant with a couple extra nice features and a maintainer who is more on my wavelength than Eugen. Apart from that maybe try #Akkoma for being a bit lighter but I am still wary if the dev community behind it... #Miskey and its derivatives are neat but seem to me to place more stress on the browser than any other front end (it makes my #pinephone run VERY hot lol)
#Peertube is still the go-to for video but IMO it does little on its own to "foster community" if that makes any sense...but you probably know what it takes to do that with #NETV
#Pixelfed looks compelling for picture/media sharing...might try that one out since it's #MadeInAlberta :blobcheeky:
Perhaps #WriteFreely for long form blogging but like Peertube it seems difficult to get traction for some reason.
Ultimately though given unlimited time I would probably make my own BBS/fourm style fedi app!
@ajroach42 Sounds solid to me. #GoToSocial also looks cool too though I haven't looked too hard at it. If I was looking at a server for just me or my immediate family I would probably seriously consider that over anything in the masto or pleroma/akkoma realm.
Seems like a good choice to focus on a small number of distinct options for fedi hosting.
@msh@ajroach42 I tried to get them to put in video responses, a thing that really created youtube communities back in the day before google killed them. They gave me some statistic that didn't have anything to do with the point, but then never responded when I tired to counter that.
@ajroach42 I think @anubis2814 was talking about suggesting the feature be added to Peertube but the devs there dismissing the idea.
I have this general vibe that peertube's priorities aren't focused on community building but nore like video sharing among individuals, which is fine but not quite what creative types are looking for.
@ajroach42
I quite like the idea of #snac2, but would I use it for serious work? Not sure it's there yet. #Akkoma is a temptation for small instances, but I know the memory problems my last instance admin had with Pleroma (although Mastodon may have similar issues?). Probably #Hometown for a reasonable sized community though?
