It might seem kind of odd or amusing, to folks outside of California, that a non-severe thunderstorm approaching a major city is a newsworthy event. But across much of coastal California, especially in the north, lightning is in most years a notably uncommon event! https://t.co/zWYJSr6lFk

Northern Californians are terrified of lightning in late summer and early fall before the rain starts. In August of 2020, with the area dry as a bone, a tropical depression remnant strayed north and a night of heavy "dry" lightning strikes hit the mountains of the wine country north of San Francisco. The result was something called with LNU Lightning complex, also the Walbridge Fire, which burned for months until the rain finally came in early October.
