@tofugolem They are much more affordable too. I bought laser printer, but I don't use it much since retiring. once a year I might need to print Income tax copies. That's it.
@Rasta I have a printer but it ends to run out of ink every week. I kind of gave up and just it as a scanner. HP, arg…..
I go into the office or the library if I need to print something.
@Rasta I don’t print much. I’ll print just a couple of one or two page reports and it will come back low toner right away. I looked up the model and people had the same complaint..
I did not pay for it. But the toner runs around $65 each time, which I do pay for, so I just gave trying to keep replacing it.
I used to use those refillable toners and I end up with a big mess…
I go into the office twice a week so I just schedule print jobs for those days.. has not been a big issue..
@oldredsubby Yea, not worth retopping, it's messy. Most of the inkjets perform badly if not used regularly. The cartridges dry up and seal over the spray head. I had a very expensive 24 inch Dot matrix, took a whole desktop but amazing speed and features. It was more than a Laser Printer
@oldredsubby Noisy though, in those days, I had a computer desk in my bedroom, I'd be up early and press PRINT and my wife would shoot out of bed angry, the whole table vibrating from the carriage return lol
@Rasta they were loud. But you can run the ribbon three our four cycles before you needed to change it. And then you only needed to get one type, now you get toner it’s like going to an auto part store…
@oldredsubby I know, and you need so many parameters. My first laser printer didn't have drivers anymore. I contacted the company, they put out 20 new printers a year, they don't write backward drivers. So, like my games, they reached the end of their life cycle
@Rasta@oldredsubby Windows HP Laserjet drivers worked for most of the compatibles, just choose the Laserjet model that came out around when yours was made.
And I have never been able to keep an inkjet working either. They look better for pictures but there is no way to just have one around for when you occasionally need it.
@mike805 NOT the compatibility, it's the software. For example, I have an old Vista machine that I can still game on, but I don't The drivers for the game were not written for Windows 10 Laser printers made during Windows 98, will rarely find drivers for Windows XP and we're pushing out Windoze 11
@Rasta Laser printers that are HP PCL 5 compatible will work fine using the various HP drivers in current Windows. Works for me anyways. And they're better built than most of what they sell today.
@mike805 Yes, until you change version of windows. Since Windows 3.1, you needed a driver from the printer company, not Windoze.
All those programs that had drivers, My Duke Nukem game, My Enemy Territory game all those stopped working due to no drivers. You can make them print with a different driver, but if the exact model isn't listed, printing will be inaccurate or askew . I think my current laser printer was recognized by Win10, but that's the only one so far that did
@Rasta I know it’s crazy. The newer products are worse than what they replace… Like you mentioned they don’t even provide parts or even software for the older models..

Mind you, when we ordered our new car in 2019, I paid an extra £3,000 for a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and we have all B&O AV in the house as I’m a bit fussy about sound reproduction 🫣
@TCMuffin Oh, that's interesting. Back in the day, my audiophile friend, had to have Bose® speakers. The ones he wanted, he had to save up for for a year. When they arrived, they have to be 4 feet from any solid surface (wall, furniture) 5 feet from other stereo appliances and you had to be 4 feet back to sit in the optimal range. His living room wasn't big enough. He nearly cried. Had to return them and take another low-end speaker
@TCMuffin I've never seen one on a motorized swing arm. My current office, was once a bedroom, when I had my grandson living with us, he stayed in this room and had a TV mounted on an arm, where he could not reach it, or pull it down. (Crib) when he moved away, and I turned it back into my office, I lowered the arm, so I can watch it from my desk. It swings manually.
@TCMuffin No, not at all, except genealogy links. But, being Navy, I've been there so many times, I began to speak like them. Where's the Loo, I'm paraletic, tosser, wanker, Sunak LOL all the curse words. I spent 28 days alongside Plymouth. Some crew got married there, just the single fellas, and we were sounding very local at the end. But, it's been over 20 years since we sailed there last.

@TCMuffin My power amp and pro speakers are all I put on now, other than headphones. Even in the car, I'm on headphones with audiobooks, but I do have music on my CD player
@Rasta I use my printer so rarely, but I do use it. Last time I used it to print out chord charts to play to because I wasn't set up to use a laptop or tablet. And I can easily write on paper...
@static I used to run a DJ business. I'd carefully type the names of all my new song additions, and print off booklets. Many DJs don't take requests, or play what the audience wants. I forced them to pick, I printed the titles they couldn't remember to request music.
Then, Tax time, I printed my forms, but now, I mostly don't, I file electronically, and I don't even know where my printed copy is.
@elala You can have a lot of fun with them. I once went too far, as I sometimes do, and duplicated an actual ticket. replacing the text a bit, to appear real ,but all fake. Trouble is, that might be considered Fraud, using an actual ticket to fool someone. Most people that get parking tickets are idiots who drive around with the ticket on their window all day. They should suspend their license for it LOL
