I think the enshittification of streaming services will be the main cause for piracy going mainstream again. Netflix mostly fixed a service problem but the whole industry seems obsessed in reversing it now https://9to5mac.com/2023/12/27/amazon-prime-video-ads-2/

@djlink I've personally always been against the whole streaming systems, but they're sure not helping me becoming a new user by dragging it into the ground like that! 😆

@djlink So this is just Twitch Turbo for Prime Videos? Jeezos Beezos.

Nifflas,
@Nifflas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink Yeah. I used to use subscription services for streaming, but a bunch of years ago everything I wanted to watch just became too fragmented and I can't afford to be on every subscription service.

It's such a silly problem, because I'm actually willing to pay. I subscribe to several twitch streamers just to support them.

If the service problem is fixed, I'm up for paying!

djlink,

@Nifflas exactly, the prices increases alone aren't the issue, is that none of the services now solves the issue, so why pay, especially increasing prices to mostly stay the same

Nifflas,
@Nifflas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink Yeah! I think their business people think they're trying to sell an attractive catalogue of shows.

But, as a person, I just want to see... say, What we do in the Shadows, Severance, Stranger Things, Andor, and a bunch more. Like, which streaming service am I supposed to get for that? All of them? X)

edit: Sorry about the rant! I think we're in total agreement.

@Nifflas @djlink Subscribing to one service at a time works ok for us. Of course it doesn’t beat everything in one place, but monopolies have their own problems.

Nifflas,
@Nifflas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@runevision @djlink Yeah, that's true. Maybe I could rotate my subscriptions.

But what I'd really want isn't necessarily a subscription. With games, I can just buy the ones I want. It's why I always buy the games I play.

Online TV series renting wouldn't be a bad approach. I do rent movies online sometimes after all.

runevision,
@runevision@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Nifflas @djlink You can rent most stuff no problem from e.g. Apple and others. It’s just very expensive compared to subscriptions.

Nifflas,
@Nifflas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@runevision @djlink Yeah, which loops back to the price problem. I just don't currently have a way to see the things I want to see that I can also afford :(

Nifflas,
@Nifflas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@runevision @djlink Maybe rotating my subscriptions could work tho? I don't know why I didn't consider that. It's a bit of a hack but yeah, it's an option.

runevision,
@runevision@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Nifflas @djlink that’s a comment on the fragmentation issue, not the ads issue the thread was originally about which is just plain shitty indeed.

Nifflas,
@Nifflas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@runevision oh yeah, that's true! Sorry that I got a bit sidetraccked
