opened YouTube and saw this, looks like EU is forcing Google to ask if we want our data to be shared across multiple services for ads purposes. Which probably no one wants.

BigTheDave,
@BigTheDave@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink It reads to me like "Hey, we're allowed to share data to Prevent Crime and have Interoperability, but the EU require us to ask consent to do the stuff that makes us the real money"

What's your favorite version of Silicon Valley repackaging an old tech as new, at 10x the price?

BigTheDave,

@ZachWeinersmith The number of times they keep re-inventing Buses, Trams or other light rail... but with AI!

I don't want to get back to the old days of save points only in certain places, But these had a psychological effect "it's a feature" where it was such a relief to find them. you felt safe, accomplished, like tiny milestones, a lot of game design around these too.

BigTheDave,
@BigTheDave@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink 90% of the tension in alien isolation was from seeing a save point and hoping you can get to it without being eaten

I think the enshittification of streaming services will be the main cause for piracy going mainstream again. Netflix mostly fixed a service problem but the whole industry seems obsessed in reversing it now https://9to5mac.com/2023/12/27/amazon-prime-video-ads-2/

the funny thing about this is that if we wait long enough, the generation after GenZ might like gifs again and it will be fashion again. most things usually circle back.

I have a room graph set up but because of the way it carves rooms with a random walk, rooms can become connected apart from the graph. This is making locked doors and key an issue since the player can often sneak around locked doors. Not sure it's a real issue yet. It might play fine.

BigTheDave,
@BigTheDave@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@grumpygamer If it does there's plenty of ways to sort it out.

Like finding every exit to a room and locking them all off.

    Yay! The Christmas season starts today & I love it.

    I don't do religion & I don't do rampant consumerism, but I am here 100% for the sparkle. I live in Scotland, winter is dark, we need the extra sparkle.

    And the Santa hats. I am SO here for the Santa hats. Bright red & fluffy, I mean.... come on.

    Anyhow, I'm aware that it is not for everyone, so I am going to tag all my festive pics with so they're easy to avoid.

    Let's go!

    Two large standing stones in moorland. There is blue sky behind them, with white fluffy clouds. The stone on the left has a Santa hat, animated googly eyes and a white beard and moustache. The one on the right has a tall red and white stripey elf hat and google eyes.

    BigTheDave,

    @eclectech I'm here for the Christmas Market that is now nothing but dodgy food vans and thrill rides.

    Nothing like having a sausage of suspicious origin then going on that mad spinny magic carpet ride

    gpus are incredibly more expensive and it seems like a GPU from 2017 (GTX 1080TI) still hold well against a RTX 4060TI from 2023.

    @djlink I'm still using a 1070Ti and the only game I've had even slightly chug was Midnight Suns - and that was notoriously poor performance wise.

    Oh, and Baldur's Gate 3 - but that wasn't a Graphics thing that was a Chapter 3 thing (and CPU bound I think).

    Where do you draw the line between AI you like and dislike? My sense is there's a serious disdain for e.g. generative art or text, but not for other machine-learning stuff, like plant ID apps or speech to text software.

    BigTheDave,
    @BigTheDave@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @ZachWeinersmith So long as the training data was procured ethically. Ie, the original owners gave consent and/or were paid fairly.

    My main beef is that these generative AI's are just this meme

    I love British sitcoms... and the work of Simon Pegg.

    In the photo Nick Frost, his character in the series Spaced (1999-2001) wore the flag of Ukraine in some series. I don't know why, never noticed that

    I've seen a lot of "I've spent years learning this tool and now it's wasted". Majority of that gamedev knowledge is transferable, it's not gone. It might be different on a new tool but you'll know how to do it, it's easier to search the equivalent then not knowing at all.

    BigTheDave,
    @BigTheDave@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @djlink It was transferable skills that got me into Unity.

    I already knew C# through the .net stack and I'm still a full-time applications developer.

    Even then, if the whole C# ecosystem crashed, I know I can transfer my skills over to any language or tech stack and become proficient in a very short time.

    You just have to be willing to make the leap and, importantly, be okay with making basic mistakes again for a while.

    @paintedsky Never look at the generated HTML for Facebook...

    Just don't.

    BigTheDave,
    @BigTheDave@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @paintedsky I had looked into it when my adblocker stopped working a few years back.

    They had literally a set of DIVs with the individual letters of SPONSORED in them, with randomly generated, but hidden, letters. Which weren't 'hidden' or 'display:none', no, they were offset vertically by -100px.

    How did I get around it? I targeted all the parent DIVs, grabbed the text of it's children, and saw if they could make the word 'sponsored' out of it.

    And it's been even more obfuscated since then.

    A lot of businesses switched to Facebook as their “webpage” over the years and I feel that will be a problem for them in the long run. Discord communities moving from self hosted forums to discord is going to be the same eventually. Will be way harder to move them back to other stuff. Keeping both is always better.

    Same with Twitter.
