how i'm starting 2024: trying to play OSRS on Windows 98 (unsuccessfully)

The game has redirected to an error page telling me that my version of Java is out of date

after installing 98SE in 86Box, installing KernelEx and Java SE 1.6 Update 31, it's... trying its best

this emulated machine has a 300MHz Pentium II. i don't even know if this is fast enough to get in-game (I'm currently stuck on the login screen)

@Ninji play it on Mac OS9!

@Violet unfortunately the oldest supported JRE is Java SE 6 Update 10, from 2008

i don't think that would ship for OS 9...

@Ninji shame, I used to play runescape on 9.2 up until they dropped support for the version of java the system came with. I wonder if it's possible to run private server clients on it

@Violet what's the newest JRE you can get on 9.2, out of curiosity?

@Ninji I believe it's Java 1.1.8, running under MRJ https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1184?locale=en_GB

@Violet yeah that'd be tricky -- i just checked and the current OSRS client is built to target 1.6
