New: Wickr is dead. With very little fanfare, one of the most important free encrypted chat apps of the last ten years is no more. If you try to use today, the app will just say “Reconnecting…” Not available to download on app stores either.
This is a more personal piece on what it was like when I joined Wickr years ago. Eventually I noticed a particular type of source used it: those linked to drug trafficking.
Eventually Wickr morphed into a U.S. government contractor. I revealed CBP bought Wickr licenses, and in this piece I dump some new documents about more CBP + Wickr purchases, as recent as August 2023. After being acquired by AWS, it seemed Amazon just didn't want to deal with the criminal elements of Wickr's free app.
