A curious human being focused on creative disruption and making change for the better.

A "seasoned" campaigner and community organizer. An anxious Canadian ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ adjusting to living with a #disability (inner ear issues/ sometimes vertigo).

These days i can be found working remotely, exploring decentralized decision making, coordinating a grants program and spending time with my dogs.

Writing a book called The Monkey Flower Experiment, it's about a group of people trapped together at an off grid university on the side of a mountain after a terrible storm. It could be described as a #SolarPunk Lord of the Flies. Stay tuned.

monkeyflower,

@CanadaPlus @SpectralPineapple Ive been using Plenary on Android which does a pretty good job of pulling full articles when available. Don't think its FOSS but its seems to be focused on privacy to a certain extent. I love that it can create a custom widget that can replace the google surveillance oriented click bait feed.

I've been experimenting with a few different options on desktop. @thunderbird has been the go to for me for a long time. Since playing with Google Reader lifetimes ago.

US nuke reactor lab hit by 'gay furry hackers' demanding cat-human mutants

https://www.theregister.com/2023/11/22/nuclear_lab_hacked/

"The self-styled furry hackers meanwhile have offered to remove the staff records if the lab performs experiments that at best could be described as highly irregular.

"We're willing to make a deal with INL. If they research creating IRL catgirls we will take down this post," the group said. The creation of real cat-human female hybrids is a frequently posted meme in certain corners of the internet, but it's not the laboratory's specialty.

According to the hacktivists, the invaders gained access to "hundreds of thousands of user, employee and citizen data," among it full names, dates of birth, email addresses, social security numbers, employment info and "lots lots more!"

INL employs more than 6,100 people in and around Idaho Falls at its massive 890-square mile site, which houses the densest concentration of nuclear reactors in the world. The 70-year-old facility has been instrumental in the development of nuclear power, was the home of the first nuclear generator to provide a usable amount of electricity, and developed the first nuclear propulsion system for US Navy submarines.

It's unclear what motivated SiegedSec's attack on INL. In its previous network penetration of NATO the group attributed its actions to the military org's "attacks on human rights," adding that it's also "fun to leak documents." ยฎ"

New: Wickr is dead. With very little fanfare, one of the most important free encrypted chat apps of the last ten years is no more. If you try to use today, the app will just say โ€œReconnectingโ€ฆโ€ Not available to download on app stores either.

This is a more personal piece on what it was like when I joined Wickr years ago. Eventually I noticed a particular type of source used it: those linked to drug trafficking.

Eventually Wickr morphed into a U.S. government contractor. I revealed CBP bought Wickr licenses, and in this piece I dump some new documents about more CBP + Wickr purchases, as recent as August 2023. After being acquired by AWS, it seemed Amazon just didn't want to deal with the criminal elements of Wickr's free app.

RIP Wickr.

Ive watched a lot of excellent keynotes by @deviantollam over the years but this one is really something special:

Insightful, practical, touching and motivating. I'm working my way through some of the items on that checklist at the end of the video. I especially loved the last three action items. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿงก

It does a disservice to all Jewish people to conflate opposition to human rights abuses and war crimes with Anti-Semitism. Failure to to act on these injustices is what radicalizes people and spreads support for violent uprisings.

Does anyone seriously see the ongoing domination and subjugation of Palestinians as a pathway to peace and safety? The extreme violence of the current regime let alone the consistent cruelty of past administrations; and ultimately the indifference of the global community, is what has led us to this moment.

If we zoom out, and honestly and objectively look at a 25 mile wide by 7 mile wide slice of land enclosed by high walls and high tech military barriers where all the 2 million people inside are the same ethnicity and nationality, live in abject poverty and without basic human rights its hard not to see it as a fundamental injustice that must be corrected. The appropriate response would be to say "not in our name", and to support peaceful efforts to make things right.

We need meaningful discussion of a pathway to peaceful coexistence from intelligent influential leaders. Its a bummer to see so many post that claim to be about protecting us as Jewish people but in fact potentially leave us in more danger.

Ceasefire and negotiation of the return of the hostages is the only option and it needs to be the beginning of real change. Bombing only puts the hostages and all Jewish people in more danger.

Ultimately the real anti-Semites are empowered by this whole situation. Being Jewish should not be synonymous with support for radical Zionist politics or committing human rights abuses. I fear as a community we let our trauma blind us to damage we are doing to others. Hurt people hurt people. We need to end the cycles of violence before it spins completely out of control.

I'm a fan of the @eff and a member.

Just reread Across the Electronic Frontier by @mkapor Mitchell Kapor and John Perry Barlow in 1990. So much in that piece still rings true today. https://www.eff.org/pages/across-electronic-frontier#main-content

One thing in this piece on the origins of the Electronic Frontiers Foundation that I think deserves a bit more discussion is this assertion:

"...One result of this is a neo-Luddite resentment of digital technology from which little good can come..."

I have been reading an excellent book by @brianmerchant called Blood in the Machine - The Origins of the Rebellion Against Big Tech which provides a much more robust perspective and analysis on the Luddites as a movement.

Luddites were not afraid of new technology they were fighting exploitation and subjugation and trying to preserve craftsmanship and autonomy.

Not all technology is automatically adopted by society, in fact much of the technology developed does not get the funding required to scale. Technologies are not developed in a void outside of existing power dynamics and those at the top often use these new tools to further their own ends as opposed to supporting public goods for their own sake.

New frontiers are generally the tip of the sword of colonization and exploitation. The internet has helped create surveillance capitalism and what @Snowden Snowden described as "turn-key totalitarianism".

Everyone building at the cutting edge of innovation has a responsibility to consider how their tools will be used and by whom. Credible neutrality is important in some contexts but also in a sense "neutrality" is by default support for the status quo of inequity and injustice.

True disruption must fundamentally wrestle with democratization and decentralization of power. Easier said then done given we all need funding for our projects to survive and nobody likes to lose control of their inventions. How we fund new technologies and the embodiment of the values on open source technologies that are interoperable and composable are not simple philosophical decisions, they are critical decisions that will shape the world we live in in significant ways.

The internet is indeed a new frontier but it is also just a new layer on top of the real world that can either liberate us or further subjugate us. Currently it is doing both in varying degrees and the choices we make today have profound implications.

Billionaires are a Menace to Society...

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/nov/20/billionaires-great-carbon-divide-planet-climate-crisis?

"Let me put it this way: if you made $10,000 a week โ€“ a princely sum by the standards of most people โ€“ you would have to work every week from the year of Jesusโ€™s birth until this week to earn over a billion dollars. To earn as much as Elon Muskโ€™s net worth at that rate โ€“ currently $180bn, according to Forbes โ€“ youโ€™d have to work every week for more than a third of a million years โ€“ that is, since before Homo sapiens first emerged in Africa....

... billionaires are a menace to the rest of us: their sheer political size warps our public life. Disproportionately older, white and male, they function as unelected powers, a sort of freelance global aristocracy who are too often trying to reign over the rest of us. Some critics think that the supergiant tech corporations that have spawned so many modern billionaires operate in ways that resemble feudalism more than capitalism, and, certainly, plenty of billionaires operate like the lords of the Earth while campaigning to protect the economic inequality that made them so rich and makes so many others so poor. They use their power in arbitrary, reckless and often environmentally destructive ways."
