Don’t use ChatGPT to diagnose your kid’s illness—study finds 83% error rate

It was bad at recognizing relationships and needs selective training, researchers say.

@arstechnica Do not base any decision you make on what an ai language model tells you. It is trained to replicate the style, tone, and other aesthetics of the text it is trained on. It only knows that these words often follow other words, not what those words mean or if what it is saying is true.

@arstechnica almost like we spend 4 years in school and 3-7 years in training for a reason…

@arstechnica
AI is kinda like the old "I've got a bridge to sell you" 😂

@arstechnica It's yet another the future is stupid moment that this actually needs to be said.

@arstechnica EIGHTY-THREE PERCENT ERROR RATE!!!

It's not that skynet will come alive and kill us, it's that we'll defer our responsible decision making to crap-factories.

arctic,

@arstechnica I hate that this is an article that needs to be written…

@arctic @arstechnica Exactly what I was gonna say. AI doesn't know you & it doesn't innately know when it's misinforming you!!!

@arstechnica perhaps it's better to ask a doctor

SirMars,

@arstechnica lol. And don't take advice from Web M.D. You'll think you are dieing.

noagenda,

@arstechnica perhaps the public checking in with ChatGPT instead of a chat with a GP (ChatGP, eh? Eh!?), says something about the state of accessible healthcare.

@arstechnica I don't understand why it's so hard to get people to understand that LLMs are not actually AI and lack the most important part of that definition: an actual understanding. All they can do is put together denoising patterns. That can be incredibly useful in carefully controlled scenarios, but terrible for something like a general diagnostic...

@arstechnica congratulations, you found something even more inaccurate than WebMD
