A couple of shopping trips these last two days, during quiet store times, and masked.

With COVID in the house, I'm preparing in case I get it too, and there'd be nobody to nurse me along. Pantry was pretty well stocked already. A couple of days of incoming nasty weather too, so I'm ready for various Armageddon scenarios.

Biggest near-term risk is the urge towards heavy snacking while waiting to see if the virus will attack.

@ottaross So far, I’ve had it for a week and my wife still doesn’t. We turned on the duct fan full time and are using a portable air purifier. Maybe this helped. Good luck!

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@jaybaltz good to know. Yes, doing the full time fan too. Trying to stay on opposite sides of the cold air return vents from each other.
How was the progression of symptoms? Hoping K's sore-throat phase is over quickly. Seems nasty.

jaybaltz,
@jaybaltz@mas.to avatar

@ottaross I got a mild sore throat and a bit of congestion, but not more than a cold so far. I had a a whole bunch of vaccinations and got paxlovid when I tested positive. All that might have helped. We’ll see how it goes!

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@jaybaltz @ottaross I had almost asymptomatic COVID recently. Only tested as I was visiting elderly people and had felt a bit lethargic (which I otherwise attributed to the grey, rainy, short days)

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@chrisbegley @jaybaltz interesting. I'm testing regularly with the spouse fighting it with that thought in mind, that I may have it but not know. Didn't want to grocery shop in that case, even masked, if I could avoid it.

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@jaybaltz sounds like a merciful course so far. We're up to date on all the vaxes, but haven't been able to access paxlovid for her from any source yet.

jaybaltz,
@jaybaltz@mas.to avatar

@ottaross If you’re over 60 or in a high risk group, the pharmacists can just prescribe it. Not sure if there’s a way for others to get it in Ontario.

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@jaybaltz yes sounds like that's the criteria being applied, though there are lots of anecdotes of others getting access anyway.

Oh well, not fitting those criteria should mean lower risk, one would hope.

jaybaltz,
@jaybaltz@mas.to avatar

@ottaross Paxlovid also gives you a constant strong bitter taste in your mouth the whole time you’re taking it. Worse than the mild Covid!

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@jaybaltz that seems unpleasant indeed.

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross @jaybaltz I think all you need to get Paxlovid is a chronic disease. They should be pretty easy to come up with. I think if you have a regular prescription, you have a chronic disease. But other things like asthma would likely fit the bill. It's not like they can compel you to disclose.

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@human3500 @jaybaltz probably true. My SO is frustratingly low on chronic health probs - lol.

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross @jaybaltz Run the furnace full time with Merv 13 or better filters. Use a crbox or five. Fresh air. We were able to isolate but it was September. We're better equipped now.

johnefrancis,
@johnefrancis@mastodon.social avatar

@human3500 @ottaross @jaybaltz overfiltering with high-MERV filters seemed to shorten the life of my furnace blower and heat exchanger. Hard to say for sure, but I'd be careful to put in anything more restrictive than recommended. Maybe your equipment, ductwork are already close to minimum air flow.

Go nuts with the crboxes instead.

@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

Still clear over here.

Pkbwood,

@ottaross Phew. Good luck. And a speedy recovery to K!

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@Pkbwood thx, yes hopeful. Will pass it on.

LillyHerself,
@LillyHerself@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross Oh nooooo.

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@LillyHerself so far so good. Lots of precautions in place and daily testing still has me negative. Just having breakfast on opposite sides of the kitchen exhaust fan now, window cracked.

@ottaross Amazon occasionally has stuff at reduced prices as the packaging has been damaged or the item returned.
I managed to get a small HEPA air purifier at around half price and it's been worth its weight in gold. It's big enough to clear one normal sized room of viruses, dust, particulates, etc.

Might be worth keeping a look out for one.

I run mine all day in my bedroom and you notice immediately the difference when you enter the room. Clean air to sleep in!

@LillyHerself would be nice to have around
