So the morning breakfast done and wandered through Atwater market shops to select bread, local sausage, cheeses, bread and paté and then took metro & walked to the St Lawrence river near Verdun to select a picnic & eclipse viewing spot.

Fun seeing people scouting spots! It's an event!

@ottaross So glad you had such a good experience. Ours was a bit more hit and miss with lots of clouds, but still fun and very cool.

Just a bid the City can’t afford, that went forward contrary to Council’s direction, for which there is no paper or email trail. Nothing to see here. #Toronto #TOpoli

I have an essay out! In Massachusetts Review! And it's one of the only four pieces they've made available online!
You can read it here -
https://massreview.org/sites/default/files/10_65.1Azaad.pdf (link to pdf)
The essay is about Radical Unforgiveness. It is also about grasslands. Let me know what you think of it!

@AmbaAzaad Great piece. Have you read the article, Apologizing for evil, by the philosophy prof, Alice MacLaughlan? I think you would like it.

Like me, my friend Bob enjoys 1950s music, but he's often unreliable. He was going to the big box housewares store and I asked him to get me a loofah brush and a bamboo chopping board.

Ultimately I was disappointed – Bob bought a loofah, but no bamboo.

Via Rail, I love you, but wow, are you inadequate. #PublicTransportation #trains

Pkbwood,
@Pkbwood@mastodon.online avatar

Never mind your extremely limited schedule, which is hard to take seriously if you have ever seen what train travel between major cities looks like in so many parts of the world.

Pkbwood,
@Pkbwood@mastodon.online avatar

My train to Montreal was 40+ minutes late earlier this week, and my train back to Toronto (which I am currently sitting on) is running close to an hour late. I'm having a deeply painful nostalgia for Spanish trains that I could set my watch by. You can actually make plans around the scheduled arrival time, because you can rely on it.

Pkbwood,
@Pkbwood@mastodon.online avatar

And now I'm in the weird position of hoping we slow down just a smidge more so that we are an hour late, because only then will you offer us any compensation - in the form of "travel credits" of 50% of the fare towards another ticket in the next six months.

Pkbwood,
@Pkbwood@mastodon.online avatar

By contrast, Renfe's high-speed trains will REFUND you that same 50% of your fare for being more than FIFTEEN minutes late. Over 30 minutes, the refund is 100%. Yes, all your money back. This would make my entire Toronto-Montreal trip free.

If it were high-speed, that is, which would also mean it took 2.5 hours instead of 5. I'm dreaming in technicolour now.

Pkbwood,
@Pkbwood@mastodon.online avatar

It's hard to believe rail was ever central to Canada's national mythology and history. Passenger rail is just not serious in Canada. Toronto-Montreal is one of the busiest domestic travel corridors in the world, but somehow we can't figure out how to deliver good, frequent, reliable service between these cities.

Pkbwood,
@Pkbwood@mastodon.online avatar

@ottaross The more you know about other systems, the more you wonder if Canada maybe doesn't have engineers, or universities, or the internet.

Pkbwood,
@Pkbwood@mastodon.online avatar

@jd Yes, there was more train service when I was a kid, too. They have taken entire lines out of service everywhere. It’s depressing.

A very important report has come out from the federal govt's standing committee on science and research, calling out just how terrible scholarship funding levels are for graduate students and postdocs - basically frozen for 20 years. It would be good if it got more attention: https://www.ourcommons.ca/Content/Committee/441/SRSR/Reports/RP12784325/srsrrp08/srsrrp08-e.pdf

A couple of shopping trips these last two days, during quiet store times, and masked.

With COVID in the house, I'm preparing in case I get it too, and there'd be nobody to nurse me along. Pantry was pretty well stocked already. A couple of days of incoming nasty weather too, so I'm ready for various Armageddon scenarios.

“The emissions from production of computing devices exceed the emissions from operating them, so even if devices are more energy efficient producing more of them will make the emissions problem worse. Therefore we must extend the useful life of our computing devices. As a society we need to start treating computational resources as finite and precious, to be utilised only when necessary, and as effectively as possible.” https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.06642

With regard to that last post, that if the richest 10% reduced their CO2 emissions to the EU average, there would be a 35% decrease in global CO2 emissions...it is worth noting that your income is in the top 10% of the world if it is over ~$122,000 USD.
